It's what every little kid dreams about as they play basketball on a worn out concrete slab in front of their garage. It's a scenerio Jason Meyer has probably played out a thousand times. The game is tied with only seconds left. Take the ball at the top of the key and move toward the basket only to be double-teamed at the foul line. Make a move right and spin to the left. Elevate over both defenders and sink a 15-footer to give your team a 2-point win.
Jason Meyer just lived out a fantasy. With 7 seconds left in the game he drilled a 15-foot jumpshot to give the Buccs a trilling 47-45 victory in front of a packed house on the biggest stage of his life.
The game was a test of two teams that played solid defense. Covington jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first period. Cedarville was able to cut the Bucc lead to 29-26 at the half. In the third, the Buccs increased their slim lead to 39-34 to set up the thrilling fourth period.
The Buccs looked as though they would pour it on in the fourth by going up by eight with about 4:30 to go. Cedarville picked up the defense and forced their way back into the game. The Buccs committed critical fouls down the stretch which allowed Cedarville to cut the lead to 2 points with about 30 seconds to go. A turnover by the Buccs led to the thrilling finish.
Cedarville tied the game with about 15 seconds to go and had the momentum. The Buccs took the ball down the floor under heavy pressure from the Indians defense. Bert Roeth passed the ball to Meyer and the rest is history.
The win gives the Buccs the District Championship and another crack at Bethel in the Regionals. Bethel handed the Buccs their worst defeat of the season with a 70-46 win earlier in the season.
