Shelby County has a history of producing quality basketball teams year in and year out. The Buccs' first round opponent in the Sectional Tournament is one of those teams. Houston traditionally has a way of consistently putting a quality team on the floor. The Buccs have a deep tradition of their own and they also own a 15-4 record.
None of the history, tradition and records matter when the game starts. What matters is who plays solid defense, controls the glass and avoids costly mistakes. That's what the difference was for the Buccs who squeaked by Houston to advance to the second round.
The first half was nip and tuck the entire way. Both teams had their moments but neither team was able to make a run. Houston outscored the Buccs 13-10 in the first stanza and the Buccs returned the trick in the second to tie the game at 23-23 at the half.
The third period was the difference in the game. The Buccs made a run, outscoring Houston 16-8 to take an 8-point lead. Houston battled back in the fourth as the pace of the game picked up. Each team lit up the scoreboard in the fourth with Houston holding a 23-21 edge in the period. The 2-point edge wasn't enough to overcome the 8-point lead the Buccs went into the period with and the Buccs advance with a 60-54 win.
Three Buccaneer players scored in double figures with the Meyer duo leading the way with 16 points each. Bert Roeth knocked down 13 points while Jason Meyer crashed the boards with 14 of the Buccs 28 rebounds.
The Buccs play Russia in the second round of the Sectional Tournament at Piqua High School on March 2.
