January 27, 2001 – COVINGTON
There was a time when Tipp City and Covington battled it out for conference bragging rights. That was when both teams were in the Southwest Rivers Conference. Even though the Buccs play in the Cross County Conference, this rivalry is still alive and well.

To even add to the rivalry, Tipp City's coach, Matt Pond is a Covington grad and was a standout for the Buccs in football and basketball in the mid-'80s. During Pond's senior season at Covington, the Buccs beat the Red Devils 23-0 in football but lost 66-58 in basketball in a season that saw the Buccs finish with a 17-5 record in Bob Huelsman's final year of a legendary coaching career that included a 228-68 record in 13 years.

After Bob Huelsman retired from coaching, Steve Fisher took over with current Buccs' coach, Roger Craft as assistant coach. Now Fisher is in Bethel, Craft is in Covington and Pond is the head man in Tipp City. You can track each coaches experience back to Bob Huelsman.

Bob Huelsman must have been smiling when he witnessed the game between the Buccs and the Red Devils. It must have been deja vu to see two teams that run a version of his own program.

The Buccs jumped out to a 4-point lead by the end of the first period, 20-16. They increased their lead to 34-15 at the half as they used another balanced offensive attack on the Red Devils.

The second half was much similar to the first half, with Covington just a step ahead of Tipp City. The Buccs outscored the Red Devils by 5 points in the third and 6 points in the fourth period to come away with a 82-64 win. The score was an 18-point victory but the game was hardly a blowout. The Buccs gradually built the 18-point lead throughout the game and each quarter was fairly close. The Buccs just won all of the quarters which contributed to the 18-point margin of victory.

Four Buccaneer' players scored in double digits. Again, Jason Meyer led the Buccs with 23 points while Bert Roeth wasn't far behind with 22 points. Josh Burelison has become a scoring threat from the point-quard position as of late by dropping in 15 points. Jarod Meyer contributed 11 points of his own for the Buccs.

At 11-4, the Buccs head back to the road as they travel to Tri County North to battle the Panthers on February 2.
