December 22, 2001 – ANNA
It's getting hard to be a Buccs fan if you have a heart condition. Or, if you are feint of heart...you might stay away from Saturday night games. For whatever reason, the Buccs seem to be heart-stoppers on Saturday night, as anyone who traveled to Anna can verify. Their thrilling 52-49 win over the Rockets followed last week's come-from-behind effort against Dayton Christian, which came on the heels of that one lone loss on Saturday night two weeks earlier against Fairlawn. What gives?

Well in a word...Covington is playing some of the area's best basketball against some of the district's best competition during their December schedule. Friday night's league win over Newton set the stage for arguably, three of the tougher games for the 2001-02 season...starting in Anna.

The Rockets came out red-hot, with sharp-shooting Jason Banks hitting an incredible percentage of NBA three-pointers to build an eleven point lead at one point. Nothing went right for the Buccs. Shots weren't falling, the defense couldn't stop Banks and company...and, there were a few calls that seemed contrary to the Christmas spirit. The Buccs needed a Christmas miracle, it seemed, so off the bench it came with the re-appearance of "3 Point Al". Alex Hague hit a clutch three to bring the Buccs to within eight points. Just before the half, he hit another to bring them within five...and at 3:12 of the third period, he hit still another to bring them to within one. Jarod Meyer's driving layup at the end of the third gave the Buccs their first lead of the night.

Jason Banks scored 22 in the first half for the Rockets, on one three-pointer after another, but the story of the night was the second half defense of Jarod Meyer and the rest fo the Buccs in limiting Banks to just two second half points...with a variety of triangle and box and one defenses that allowed the Buccs to claw their way in the last minute to their sixth straight victory.. Meyer (Jarod) was again clutch at the point with the ball and made two big free throws to seal the matter with seven seconds on the clock.

It was a frightful, but sweet win over another tough Shelby County League opponent and sets the stage for this weekend's double feature. Russia comes to town on Friday night, followed by last year's Regional finalist, Marion Local, for still another Saturday night gasser.

It was another great weekend for the Buccs, who extend their record to 7-1. On behalf of the FanFile, best wishes to Buccs for a wonderful, but short, holiday...and to Buccs fans everywhere. Let's hope the Buccs can deliver their own present with a couple of big wins next week. It's going to tell a lot about just what to expect from this club down the stretch. Feliz Navidad to everyone!
