December 21, 2001 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers played perhaps their best basketball to this point of the season in their 70-39 trouncing of the Newton Indians. The Buccs played aggressively on defense and took advantage of opportunities on offense. Every player contributed tonight as they put on a balanced performance.

After a well contested first period which concluded with the Buccs holding a slim 10-8 lead, the Buccs exploded with a near perfect second quarter. Covington's defense was dominating, holding Newton to one field goal the entire period. Newton made 5 of their eight points from the free throw line and nearly went without a basket in the second period. Their only basket came on a 3-pointer from the baseline with under 10 seconds left in the half.

The Buccs, however, scorched the nets with 24 points in the second. Jarod Meyer started the quarter with two jumpers and then Jason Meyer took over. Jason scored the Buccs' next 10 points to give the Buccs a 23-9 lead with just under 5 minutes left in the quarter. Jarod Meyer nailed a 3-pointer and Matt Maier converting on two straight jumpers off of offensive rebounds. When the first half came to an end the Buccs held a commanding 34-16 lead.

The second half was more of the same. The Buccs continued their aggressive defense while converting Newton turnovers into points. Jarod Meyer drilled another 3-pointer while Jason Meyer and Bert Roeth knocked down their own share of shots. Matt Maier continued to scrap inside, scoring 4 of his 10 points in the third.

In the fourth period Mike Molesky made his presence felt. Molesky grabbed three offensive rebounds and converted them into points. Dusty Blythe also made a big impact in the fourth. Blythe, who was the Buccs' quarterback on the Buccs' state playoff football team, finally knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of a perfect pass complements of Josh Burelison. Dusty snuck behind the Newton defense and Josh Burelison connected with Blythe in stride for an easy layup. To close out the slow for the Buccs, Alex Hague drilled a 3-pointer to give the Buccs the 31-point win.

Tomorrow night the Buccs travel to Anna. Bucc fans know about those Shelby County teams so the Buccs will have to bring their "A" game. The last time the Buccs traveled to Shelby County was in their second game of the season and the end result was a 76-70 loss at Fairlawn.

Scoring Breakdown:
Jason Meyer – 21
Jarod Meyer – 16
Bert Roeth - 11
Matt Maier – 10
Mike Molesky – 7
Alex Hague – 3
Dusty Blythe – 2

Note: Jason Meyer moved past Lane Evans for second place on the Buccs' career scoring list. Bert Roeth also moved up on the career scoring list. Bert moved past B.J. Smith and Steve Simon for 12th place on the career scoring list.
