February 23, 2002 – PIQUA
The Covington Buccaneers played a near perfect game in the second round of the Sectional Tournament against Anna at Piqua High School. The 97-58 win was their most dominating performance of the season and it shows that the Buccs are peaking at the right time.

After a regular season schedule that included a tough two-month stretch against the best teams in the area, the Buccs had the last three weeks to get their bodies healthy. They played three games against teams (Ansonia and Bradford twice) that didn't pose much of a threat and the result was a chance for the Buccs to get their legs back for a tournament run. Tonight against Anna was their first real threat since Miami East on February 2 and the Buccs looked like a team on a mission.

The last time the Buccs played Anna on December 22 in Anna, the Rockets gave the Buccs all they could handle before Covington escaped with a 3-point win thanks to clutch shots by "3-point Al" Alex Hague. Coming into the game many critics predicted a close game again.

It appeared in the beginning that the critics may be right because Anna came out firing from 3-point range. They canned their first two attempts but Bert Roeth and Josh Burelison matched them shot for shot. The Buccs took their first lead on the game at 8-6 on 2 free throws by Roeth 1:37 into the game and the Buccs never trailed the rest of the way.

Bert Roeth scored 11 of his game high 27 points as six Buccaneers scored points in the period. Covington's defense was relentless as they forced numerous turnovers including a steal by Jason Meyer that resulted in an easy lay-up with 2:35 left to go in the first to make the score 19-10. After Anna called time-out to think things over, the Buccs went on a 9-4 run tapped off by a 3-pointer from "3-point Al" Alex Hague at the buzzer.

Bert Roeth started the second period off with a 3-pointer and Jason Meyer took over to put Anna in deep trouble. Meyer scored 8 points in the next 4:00 to put the Buccs up 38-20 with under 3:30 to go in the half. Anna responded with a 3-pointer but Jarod Meyer drilled a jumper and Bert Roeth canned another 3-pointer to give the Buccs a 47-25 half-time lead.

The Buccs had a 20+ half-time lead before; against Miami East and almost let it slip away but that wasn't going to happen tonight. Jason Meyer, Bert Roeth and Josh Burelison made sure of it by scoring 23 of the Buccs' 25 points in the period. Burelison put the finishing touches on a dominating third period and put the nail in the coffin with a jumper at the buzzer to give the Buccs a commanding 72-38 lead.

With victory well in hand, Coach Craft gave everyone playing time in the fourth. Everyone contributed in the contest and the fourth quarter was a chance for the Buccs to have some fun. Brady Reck came off the bench and nailed a 3-pointer while big Dan Kizer powered his way inside for two buckets of his own. The Buccs outscored the Rockets 25-21 in the fourth and the Buccaneer faithful erupted after a Dan Kizer jumper at the buzzer that put the finishing touches on a 97-59 win.

To put the Buccs' dominating performance into perspective one has to look at the 45-14 rebounding edge for Covington. Also, Anna only had 1 offensive rebound on the night which gave the Buccs the opportunity to run the floor in transition. The Buccs, on the other hand, had 19 offensive boards which provided second and third scoring opportunities.

On the offensive end, Bert Roeth (27), Jason Meyer (25), Josh Burelison (17), and Jarod Meyer (11) scored 80 of the Buccs' 97 points. The bench contributed greatly with 16 points and 15 rebounds, seven rebounds by Alex Hague.

The Buccs battle for the Sectional Championship next Friday night in Piqua against Fort Loramie who knocked off Fairlawn to get to the championship game.
