January 11, 2002 – COVINGTON
Defense...Defense...Defense! That was the key tonight for the Covington Buccaneers as they put another game in the win column with a 56-45 victory over a tough Tri-Village team. The Buccs struggled from the field most of the night but their defense kept the game close until shots started falling in the end. The result wasn't a pretty win but a solid win.

The Buccs started the game looking flat as they struggled to get into a rhythm offensively. Tri-Village made it difficult for the Buccs to get any open looks at the basket. The Patriots outhustled the Buccs for loose balls and rebounds which resulted in second and third offensive opportunities. Still, at the end of the first period the Buccs only trailed 13-11 thanks to their own stingy defense.

Tri-Village increased their lead in the second to 6 points until Jason Meyer nailed a 3-pointer to close the gap to 20-17. Again, the Patriots increased their lead to 5 points until Jarod Meyer canned another 3-pointer for the Buccs. Tri-Village dropped down two free throws and hit a big shot at the buzzer to head into the locker room with a 6-point lead and the momentum at 28-22.

The defense kept the Buccs in it in the first but Jason Meyer and Bert Roeth took the game over in the third period. Jason scored 11 of his game high 27 points in the period while Bert knocked down 8 of his 14 points. Jason started the period with a drive to the basket which resulted in 2 points and a foul. Seconds later Jason drilled a jumper and just like that the Buccs closed the gap to 1-point, 28-27. Bert Roeth gave the Buccs their first lead of the game only 1:35 into the third with a layup. As the period progressed the Buccs slowly added to their lead. At the end of the third the Buccs increased their lead to 7 points 41-34 on a Jason Meyer layup.

The Buccaneer defense again took over the game in the fourth period. Mike Molesky was dominating under the basket with 3 blocked shots that brought the crowd to its feet. Jason Meyer also dominated under the boards, grabbing numerous rebounds and keeping a hand in the face of Patriot shooters. The Buccs were flying around, chasing down loose balls and playing as hard as they have played all year. The game became a sloppy affair but that was the result of two teams hustling on defense and contesting every shot and pass. The Buccs defensive performance in the second half was as good as it gets. They held Tri-Village to a total of 17 second half points while scoring 34.

As the season progresses the Buccs will need their defense as they take on some of the best teams in the area in Versailles, Bethel, Twin Valley South, Miami East and Tri-County North.

The Buccs improve to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the CCC. Tomorrow night the Buccs face perhaps their toughest opponent to this point of the season in Versailles.
