January 18, 2003 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers outhustled and outgutted the Anna Rockets for 31 minutes and 52 seconds, but lost a heartbreaker in the last 8 seconds to extend their losing streak to 11 games.

Leading 54-53 with 8 seconds left, the Buccaneers had the ball after two Rocket free throws. On the inbounds pass intended for Ross Mohler, the ball went off Mohler's fingertips giving Anna one last shot at a comeback win. The Rockets converted with a three-point play with 1 second left to escape with a 56-54 victory.

"I feel so bad for the kids right now," commented Covington coach Roger Craft. "We played so hard and had every chance to win it in the end, but things just didn't go our way. We missed our final 5 shots at the free throw line that would have sealed the win. We should have had this one."

It looked liked this was the night for the Buccaneers to end their losing streak.

Covington jumped all over Anna early and built a 11-0 lead with 4:02 left in the first. Anna finally got their first points of the game with 2:48 to go in the first and by quarters end, Covington had built a 17-6 lead.

After a Rocket free throw to start the second period, both teams connected on their next two possessions to make the score 21-11. Dallas Burelison canned a 3-pointer to push the Buccaneer' lead to 13 points. Anna then connected on two 3-pointers to cut the Buccs' lead to 24-17, but the Buccs scored the final 6 points of the period to go into halftime with a 30-17 lead.

Anna found their stroke early in the third as they connected on 8 straight points to start the period which forced a Covington timeout with only 1:20 off of the clock.

The Buccs went on a 7-2 run to push the lead back to double digits, but by the end of the third period the Rockets had closed within 7 points, 44-37.

Anna started the fourth period much like they started the third. The Rockets connected on two straight jumpers and a 3-pointer to tie the score at 44 with 4:15 left in the game.

Matt Maier, Ross Mohler and Dallas Burelison each snuck in for layups and three more Buccaneer points at the free throw line gave Covington a 53-47 lead with 1:37 left in the game.

Anna began to foul, but the Buccs were never able to capitalize on their free throws in the final minutes. After Dallas Burelison connected on 1 of 2 free throws to give Covington a 54-51 lead with 1:10 left in the game, the Buccs misfired on their final five attempts from the charity stripe.

Anna took advantage of the Buccs' missed opportunities by connecting on 2 free throws of their own prior to the 3-point play that snatched victory away from the Buccs.

Matt Maier finished with a career high 18 points along with 10 rebounds. Matt McCord connected for 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Ross Mohler contributed with 11 points for the Buccs.

Covington drops to 2-12 on the season and travel to Bethel next Friday.
