February 11, 2003 COVINGTON
With tournament time right around the corner, the Covington Buccaneers were looking to gain any little bit of momentum possible against conference rival Ansonia. Unfortunately, the Buccaneers gave one of their most lackluster offensive performances of the season. The end result was a 43-25 loss to conference rival Ansonia to finish the regular season with a 3-17 record.
"We couldn't buy a bucket tonight, said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We played hard, ran the offense well and got the ball where it needed to be, but we just didn't score. It's frustrating because we play great defense, but are not able to capitalize on opportunities."
Despite converting on only 5 of 25 shots in the paint, the Buccs managed to keep the game close until the end. Trailing 26-21 to begin the fourth period, Covington was within striking distance, if only the shots would begin to fall.
Instead, Ansonia found their shot as they erupted for 17 fourth period points while holding the Buccs to only 4.
Points were few and far between for both teams in the early going as Ansonia held a narrow 10-9 edge at the end of the first. The Tigers then increased their lead to 21-14 at the half as the Buccs managed 5 second period points.
Both teams continued to struggle offensively in the third. Each team's defense made it difficult for the offensive to get into a rhythm. Covington connected for 7 third period points while holding the Tigers to 5 of their own.
"The kids do exactly what I ask of them defensively," continued coach Craft. "We held them to 43 points and lose by 18. It's obvious that we need to shoot the ball better in order to win."
With the regular season behind them the Buccs now looks to regroup in time for the sectional tournaments to begin next Tuesday at Piqua High School against Anna. Earlier in the season Covington had Anna down in the finals seconds until the Rockets connected on a 3-point play with 1 second left in the game to escape with a 56-54 win.
