December 6, 2002 COVINGTON
If there is one thing that will carry the Covington Buccaneers throughout the season it will be effort. They may not be as dynamic or athletic as they were the past few years, but they make up for their shortcomings with hustle and aggressiveness. That's what carried the Buccs tonight as they pulled off a big win over previously unbeaten Arcanum tonight at Covington High School.
Arcanum came in with a 2-0 record and were led by the multi-talented Josh Greve. Greve nearly stole the show as he sparked a Trojan comeback after being down by 13 points with under 5:00 to go in the game. Greve torched the Buccs for a game high 30 points, including 4 three pointers.
Covington was able to weather the storm, however, and walk away with a 54-51 win to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
"Our guys played with a lot of effort and intensity tonight," commented Covington coach, Roger Craft. "Arcanum is a very tough team though. We had them down late in the game and they were able to come back and make it tough on us. I have a lot of respect for coach (Richard) Cline and for what he has done with that program."
Early in the game, it appeared as though Arcanum was well on their way to their third win of the season. The Trojans jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Covington's Darin Rhoades nailed a jumper for the Buccs' first points of the game.
With Greve leading the way, the Trojans were able to build a 16-11 lead at the end of the first period.
Both teams took turns gaining momentum in the second period. Arcanum's Andy Via snuck inside for a loose ball and turned the gift into points to give the Trojans a 22-15 lead which forced a Covington timeout. By the end of the half, the Buccs were able to cut the Arcanum lead to 26-22 on two straight Matt McCord drives to the basket.
Covington turned up the defensive pressure in the third period which turned the momentum of the game. Darin Rhoades tied the game at 34 with 5:09 left in the third and the Buccs took their first lead of the game on a Matt Maier free throw a few seconds later. The Buccs then increased their lead to 38-34 heading into the final 8:00.
Dusty Rhoades and Richard Canan each drilled three-pointers to increase the Buccaneer' lead to 11 within the first two minutes of the fourth. Another basket by Ross Mohler pushed the Buccs' lead to 13 points which forced Arcanum to call timeout with just under 5:00 to go in the game.
Slowly Arcanum began chipping away at the Covington lead. The Trojans were able to narrow the score to 50-48, but that was a close as they would get. Covington pushed their lead back to 54-48 before a Josh Greve three-pointer finished the scoring with 8 seconds left in the game.
Leading the Buccs in scoring was Dan Kiser with 16 points and Darin Rhoades with 10. Matt Maier pulled down 8 reboundes while Matt McCord dished out 4 assists. Arcanum's Josh Greve led all scorers with 30 points.
Covington hosts Tipp City Saturday night at 6:30.
