There will be some familiar faces cheering the Covington Buccaneers basketball team over the next few years. The reason is the 2002-03 Cheerleading squad is much like the basketball team, they are young.
Three cheerleaders return from last year's varsity squad, Valerie Placeway, Jenny Thompson and Ramsé Cavender. Placeway is the lone senior of the group and gives veteran leadership to this year's group. All three girls have been a part of the past three football season, which saw the team go 10-0 and make playoff appearances in each season.
Three newcomers join the varsity ranks Crystal Diltz and Hollie Hitchcock made the jump from cheering at the reserve level last year and Kate McCord joins the group after moving to Covington this past summer. All three of these girls were also on the sidelines cheering the football team this past fall.
The reserve squad consists of six first-time high school cheerleaders: Jillian Schmidt, Brittany Meredith, Teresa West, Rachel Boggs, Lindsey Golden and Ashley Lunsford.
