November 30, 2002 – COVINGTON
For the second year in a row, the Covington Buccaneers basketball team fell to Fairlawn. This time, however, it was on the home floor. Last year's loss at Fairlawn could be attributed to rebounding struggles from an experienced Buccaneer team, but this year's loss can be attributed to growing pains.

The Buccs will go through games like this from time to time because of their inexperience at the varsity level. Twenty-one turnovers, 3 out of 11 from 3-point range and 39% shooting are signs of a young team struggling to find their groove in only their second game of the season.

"We missed a lot of opportunities," commented coach Roger Craft. "We shot poorely in the paint and our guards missed some open looks from the perimeter. We were only 6 out of 29 from inside the paint and that's not very good."

Although the Buccs struggled throughout, a sign of their toughness is the fact they kept the game within striking distance the entire night. The Buccs had a chance to make a run until the end, but they were never able to find the bottom of the net on a consistent basis.

After Fairlawn took a 13-12 lead after one period of play, the Buccs failed to put together any offensive consistency in the second. The Jets outscored the Buccs 13-6 in the period for a 26-18 lead at the half.

Fairlawn increased their lead to 10 by the end of the third, although the Buccs were able to match them point for point over much of the period.

The fourth period was much of the same as Covington couldn't cut into the Jet's lead. Although the Buccs held a 15-14 advantage in the fourth, the end result was a 53-44 defeat.

"We played hard and the effort was there," continued coach Craft. "We just have to control the ball better and not give up so many second and third shot opportunities. The turnovers and rebounding really hurt us. We moved well on defense, but when your shots are not falling the other aspects of your game have to pick up."

Matt McCord led the Buccs with 20 points and finished as the only double-digit scorer for Covington. McCord also tied Ross Mohler for the team high in reboundes with 8. Matt Maier and Dustin Kimmel pulled down 6 rebounds each.

The Buccs (1-1) get back in action next Friday, December 6th as they host undefeated Arcanum.
