December 28, 2002 MARION LOCAL
The Marion Local Flyers showed why they may be one of the top teams in Western Ohio, if not the entire state on Saturday night. They thoroughly dominated a young Covington Buccaneer team by the score of 52-22 after holding the Buccaneers to 7 first half points.
"Wow, they are good," commented an impressed Covington coach, Roger Craft. "They are very athletic and quick. Although it's early, they are a team that has the talent to go all the way. They are just loaded this year."
The Buccs had a difficult time all night with the Flyers' quickness and pressing defense. Marion Local forced the Buccs into 24 turnovers and never allowed a Buccaneer shooter the opportunity for an open look at the basket. The Buccaneers only managed 5 shot attempts in the first period and only connected on two, a jumper by Dallas Burelison and a layup by Matt McCord.
Marion Local struggled early to find their stroke as they held a 5-2 lead with under 3:00 to go in the period. The Flyers then exploded on a 9-2 run to take a 14-4 first period lead.
Things got worse for the Buccs in the second as the Flyers continued their defensive pressure and hot shooting. The Flyer onslaught resulted in a 21-3 scoring edge in the period. The only Buccaneer points in the second came on a 3-pointer by Dallas Burelison as Marion Local built a commanding 35-7 halftime lead.
The Buccaneers continued to struggle in the third holding onto the ball and finding the bottom of the net. Marion Local outscored the Buccs 13-5 in the period to take a 48-12 lead heading into the final 8:00.
With their perfect record intact, the Flyers substituted players throughout the fourth period. The Buccaneers began to find their stroke as they connect for 10 points down the stretch and held the Flyers to only 4 points of their own. It was too little too late, however, as the Flyers celebrated a 52-22 victory on their home floor.
"I give them (Marion Local) all of the credit," continued coach Craft. "They are the best team we've faced so far and this game showed us how that we have a long way to go. We have put this one behind us and prepare for Newton and Milton next weekend. We have plenty on work to do."
On the night Covington connected on 5 of 12 from two-point range and 2-12 from behind the arch. Marion Local dominated the boards with a 25-14 edge overall and 13-2 on the offensive boards. The Flyers connected on 17 of 40 two-point shots and 4-9 from three-point range.
Covington drops to 2-6 on the season and look to rebound in a conference battle with Newton Thursday at Newton High School.
