December 13, 2002 – UNION CITY
Luckily for the Covington Buccaneers they won't be playing another game this season on "Friday the 13th". It's a date the Buccs would like to forget after tonight's horrifying 37-34 loss to Mississinawa Valley.

To get an idea of how scary tonight's festivities were for the Buccs, all you have to do is consider that the Blackhawks came out on top despite shooting 22% from the field on 10-46 shooting.

"That's hard to believe," commented Covington coach Roger Craft. "I can't remember a game where the winning team only made 10 field goals. It's frustrating to lose that way because we are playing hard."

As they have every game this season, the Buccs played aggressive. Defensively the Buccs played well as evident by the Blackhawks' shooting difficulties. Covington's downfall was on the offensive end of the court.

The Buccs only converted 39% of their shots on 15 of 45 shooting. They were also a dismal 2-8 from the free throw line. To make matters worse, the Buccs turned the ball over 16 times.

Early on it was clear that this would be a low scoring affair. Mississinawa spread the ball out and played a half court game, eating up time on the clock.

Covington's Matt Maier scored the first points of the game on a lay-up with 4:00 gone in the first period. Mississinawa Valley then went on an 8-2 run to gain a four-point lead after one.

Dan Kiser brought the Buccs back with three straight buckets to give Covington a 12-10 lead. The Buccs stretched their lead to 16-14 by the end of the half.

The Buccs' cold shooting went even colder in the third as they only converted on 1 out of 10 shots in the period. Although the Blackhawks were not much better, they were able to capitalize to take a 24-23 lead heading into the final period.

Each team found rare buckets in the fourth until Mississinawa built a 33-31 lead with under 2:00 to go. Covington's Dan Kiser committed a foul which the Blackhawks used to increase their lead to 34-31. After another Covington turnover, Mississinawa nailed a 3-pointer to increase their lead with 8 seconds left. The Bucc's Richard Canan closed out the scoring with a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the contest at 37-34 in the Blackhawks' favor.

"Cold as ice," was the only way coach Craft could describe his team's performance. "We just didn't shoot the ball well at all."

Dan Kiser led the Buccs with 13 points while Matt Maier grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Buccs drop to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCC while Mississinawa Valley improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Covington hosts Franklin Monroe on Saturday, December 20 at 6:30 pm.
