February 7, 2003 – LEWISBURGH
Despite a breakout game from freshman Dustin Kimmel, the Covington Buccaneers fell short in their comeback attempt against the Tri-County North Panthers. Trailing 20-4 after the first period and 29-13 at halftime, the Buccs made a game of it late before falling by the score of 58-44.

"Again, the first period was a problem for us," commented Covington coach Roger Craft. "We couldn't get anything going early and they shot the ball well, making 4 three-pointers alone in the first period. We are not the type of team that can play from that far behind."

The Buccs almost did come back from the 16-point deficit thanks to the inside dominance of Dustin Kimmel, Kimmel scored a career high 20 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and recorded 3 steals, all after entering the game at the start of the second period.

Kimmel made his presence felt the moment he entered the game with five straight points to cut the North lead to 20-9. After the Panthers increased their lead to 24-9, Kimmel connected on two more shots under the basket. Dustin's 9 second period points were all the Buccs would get before halftime as the Panthers increased their lead to 29-13 at halftime.

Covington continued to struggle early in the third period despite Matt McCord and Dallas Burelison breaking through for early buckets. North outscored the Buccs 12-6 until midway through the third when again, Dustin Kimmel took over.

Number 42 scored 7 out of the Buccs' next 10 points and cut the panther lead to 44-29 at the end of the third.

"Dusty had a great night," complemented coach Craft. "He was aggressive taking the ball to the basket and playing solid defense. Sometimes he gets into foul trouble because he is so aggressive, but he played under control tonight. He's a hard working and will only get better, which is nice for us because he is only a freshman."

The Panthers began paying more attention to Kimmel in the fourth by moving an extra defender his way which opened things up for one last Buccaneer run. Matt McCord and Darin Rhoades connected on 13 of the Buccs next 17 points and cut the Panther lead to 8 points with under 3:00 to go.

After a Covington turnover the Panthers went on a 9-2 run in the final minutes to preserve the win.

Along with Kimmel's strong performance, Matt McCord knocked down 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Ross Mohler led the Buccs with 8 rebounds.

Covington dropped to 4-15 on the season and host Ansonia in the season finale this coming Tuesday.
