January 17, 2003 NEW MADISON
A team struggling with confidence and looking to break a nine game losing streak needs every break they can get. Unfortunately for the Covington Buccaneers, they never received any breaks as they dropped their tenth straight game to Tri-Village, 59-39.
As it has been over the past few weeks, the Buccs struggled early finding the bottom of the net. Covington only managed 3 first quarter points and missed open shots under the basket. They kept the game close throughout the first half by playing tight, aggressive defense and controlling the boards. Despite their cold shooting, the Buccs only trailed by 7 at the half.
"We are just missing too many open shots," commented Covington coach Roger Craft. "We got the ball in the paint, but continue to struggle finishing plays."
Trailing 20-13 at halftime, the Buccaneers caught fire in the third period and managed to cut the Patriots lead to 30-26 with under 3:00 to go in the third period. The Buccaneers had momentum on their side thanks to two 3-point plays by Matt Maier and Ross Mohler and a three-pointer by Dusty Rhoades that forced a Patriot' timeout.
Once play resumed, things unraveled for the Buccaneers.
Covington was called for two straight fouls sending Tri-Village to the free throw line and brought the Covington fans to their feet in disgust. A third Covington foul followed by a technical on Ross Mohler resulted in 11 straight points for Tri-Village and a commanding 41-26 lead after three periods of play.
"What can you say?" said Craft. "That was the difference in the game. One minute we are down by 4 and the next minute we are way down by 15. It's really tough to come back from that."
The Buccs never could recover and Tri-Village cruised through the fourth period scoring 18 more points for a 20-point win.
Both teams shot 36% from the field, but Tri-Village held a huge edge from the free throw line, connecting on 24 of 31 to the Buccs' 13 of 18. The Patriots also protected the ball better, only turning the ball over 5 times while forcing 18 Covington turnovers. Covington held a 28-19 advantage under the boards, 10 by Matt Maier.
"Matt Maier had a nice game," complemented coach Craft. "He was a force inside and defensively he held one of their top scorers (Jay) to 4 points."
At 2-11, Covington is looking to get their first win since the third game of the season as they host Anna tomorrow night.
