January 30, 2004 COVINGTON
When a team can shoot 7 of 13 from 3-point range the end result normally goes their way. That was the case as the Covington Buccaneers defeated Bethel by ten points, 47-37 tonight at Covington High School.
"That's the most 3-pointers we've made in a game all year," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Darin (Rhoades) hit 5 of them and that was big."
The early going was ugly as neither team could find the bottom of the net on a consistent basis. Covington built an early 6-3 on two baskets by Dustin Kimmel and another by Gene Studebaker.
Bethel closed out the first period on a 7-3 run as Covington only managed one basket over the final 5:00 of the period, a 3-pointer by Studebaker.
The offensive struggles for both teams continued in the second as only a total of 10 points were scored in the period. Kimmel and Brady Reck scored all 6 points for the Buccs in the stanza, which led to a 15-14 halftime lead.
Held scoreless in the first half, Covington's Darin Rhoades erupted in the third. Rhoades drilled three 3-pointers in the stanza and a basket by Dallas Burelison led to a 26-24 Covington lead at the end of the third.
Bethel's Zach Jones opened the final 8:00 with a trey to give Bethel a 27-26 lead, but Rhoades gave the lead right back to Covington with his fourth 3-pointer of the night.
Bethel tied the score at 29-29 on a Ryan Masin layin, but that was as close as Bethel would get to knocking off the Buccs.
Covington went on a 9-0 run over the next 4:00 of the contest on two baskets by Kimmel, a final trey by Rhoades and a basket by Burelison. Covington increased their lead to 44-33 on free throws by Rhoades, Matt McCord and Studebaker.
After Bethel's Mike Taylor connected on a jumper to make the score 44-35, Studebaker broke free down the middle of the court as Dallas Burelison hit him in stride on the in-bounds pass. Studebaker converted the play into a layup and went to the free throw line on the intentional foul for a 3-point play.
With the door closed on any chance of a Bethel comeback, the Buccs surrendered the final score of the night on a jumper by Bethel's Clayton Strunk.
Rhoades led all scorers with 18 points, all coming in the second half. Gene Studebaker chipped in 10 points for the Buccs while Bethel was led by Mike Taylor with 13 points.
The Buccs converted on 14-23 free throws, including 11 of 16 in the final period. Covington also took care of the ball as they only committed 10 turnovers on the night.
Bethel held a slim edge on the boards with 24 rebounds to 21 for Covington. The Bees also controlled the offensive boards with a 12-8 edge over the Buccs.
Bethel's Mike Taylor pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds, while Matt McCord led the Buccs with 6 rebounds.
Covington improves to 10-6 on the season, and runs their record to 8-0 in the Cross County Conference.
The Buccs host Tri-County North next Tuesday.
