February 27, 2004 – COVINGTON
T
o say both the Covington boys and girls teams were successful in 2003-04 would be an understatement. The boys team rebounded from a 3-17 season a year ago to finish 12-8 overall and 10-1 in the Cross County Conference, second to only Ansonia. The girls finished with an 18-2 record overall and captured a conference championship with an unbeaten record of 11-0.

They say no one player makes a team, but both Heather Fields and Matt McCord played significant rolls on their respective team. For their outstanding performance throughout the year, Fields and McCord each were selected as "Player of the Year" in the Cross County Conference.

Another individual had one of his most memorable campaigns in 2003-04. Lady Buccs' coach Chris Besecker not only lead his team to a perfect conference record and an 18-2 overall record, he also surpassed the legendary coach Bob Huelsman for most wins in school history. Well respected by those in the coaching fraturnity, Besecker was selected as the "Coach of the Year" in the Cross County Conference.

The individual selections of McCord, Fields and Besecker only emphasize the quality of basketball Covington has seen from their boys and girls teams throughout the year.
