January 3, 2004 WEST MILTON
After a slow start and a late West Milton run, the Covington Buccaneers cruised to a 58-44 non-conference win. The win improves the Buccs' record to 6-3 while dropping Milton to 3-6 on the season.
Covington found the going tough early as Milton jumped out to a 5-2 lead. The Buccs closed the gap to 8-7, but Milton outscored the Buccs 7-2 to take a 14-9 lead after 8:00 of play.
The Buccs heated up in the second as Dallas Burelison, Ross Mohler, Matt McCord and Dustin Kimmel scored baskets in a 9-0 run to give Covington their first lead of the contest, 18-14. Milton tied the score at 20-20, but Covington took the lead for good on an 8-0 run, concluded by a Burelison pass to Kimmel for the score at the buzzer.
Covington continued to roll in the third. Ross Mohler scored 8 points to lead a 21-9 Covington run to make the score 44-29 after three periods of play.
"Ross really played well tonight," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We've been trying to get him to take the ball to the basket and he did that tonight. To have him give us 14 points off of the bench was huge."
Covington opened the final period on a 7-2 run sparked by a 3-pointer by freshman, Gene Studebaker to give Covington their largest lead of the game, 49-31.
The Bulldogs wouldn't go away, however as they scored the next 13 points to close the gap to 49-44. To make matters worse for Covington, Gene Studebaker found himself on the bench after picking up his fifth foul with 2:37 to go in the contest.
Needing a spark, Dustin Kimmel took over in the final 2:00 by scoring 6 straight points. Matt McCord closed out the scoring with a steal and a layup to give Covington a 58-44 win.
On the night, Covington took advantage of high percentage shots by converted on 23-37 shots from inside the arch for 67%. The Buccs also held a 27-19 edge on the boards and committed a season low in turnovers with 8.
"That's a great sign that we are coming along," said coach Craft. "You give yourself a good chance of winning when you take care of the ball and control the boards. That's definitely a good sign."
Next up for the Buccs is Newton next Friday at Covington.
