January 9, 2004 COVINGTON
It took nearly 12 minutes of sluggish play and a 7-point deficit to finally get the Covington Buccaneers going. Once they started to roll, the Buccs never let up and cruised to a 61-47 conference win over rival Newton tonight.
Newton jumped out quickly to an 8-3 lead as Matt Koopman, Jorde Spitler and Shane Cecil all scored in the opening minutes. Covington closed out the first period with a 7-0 run, sparked by a 3-pointer by Darin Rhoades and baskets by Gene Studebaker and Matt McCord.
After both teams took turns scoring early baskets to open up the second period, Newton went on a 7-0 run of their own to take a 21-14 lead with 4:05 left in the half. Kyler Booher, who scored 6 points in the run, concluded the run with a jumper to force a Covington timeout.
Covington responded by outscoring Newton 14-1 to close out the first half and take a 28-22 lead.
"We didn't shoot well early on, but our defense kept us close until we could get going offensively," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We played a zone defense to prevent them from getting easy baskets in the backside. Once we started making our shots we were able to play them in a full-court press."
Covington opened the second half much like the ended the first half, on a big run. The Buccs outscored Newton 16-6 in the third period as Matt McCord and Dustin Kimmel scored a combined 11 points to give Covington a 46-28 lead with 8:00 to go.
After McCord increased Covington's lead to 20 points on a layup to start the final stanza, Newton gradually chipped away at the Buccs' lead. Kyler Booher scored 13 of his team high 23 points in the final period as Newton closed with 12 points with 4:00 to go in the game.
The Indians couldn't contain Matt McCord, however. McCord scored 7 of his game high 28 points in the closing minutes to give Covington a 61-47 win.
"Newton is a very well coached basketball team," complemented coach Craft. "I'm pleased with the intensity our kids brought to the floor, but we are still struggling from the line."
The Buccs managed to only connect on 8 of 21 free throws on the night. Newton connected on 74% of their free throws on 17 of 23 shooting.
Covington held a significant edge in offensive rebounding with 17 rebounds to Newton's 5. The Buccs also held a 27-21 edge in total rebounds. Newton turned the ball over 20 times while Covington committed 12 turnovers of their own.
Matt McCord led all scorers with 28 points, while Kyler Booher led the Indians with 23 points.
Covington improves to 7-3 on the season and 5-0 in the CCC. Newton drops to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Covington travels to Tipp City tomorrow night.
