February 3, 2004 – COVINGTON
Sometimes coaches worry more about the games they are suppose to win than they are the ones in which they are underdogs. Luckily for Covington's coach Roger Craft, he didn't have to worry very long against Tri-County North, a team with two wins on the season.

The Buccs jumped on the visiting Panthers early and cruised to an impressive 86-40 win.

"That's what we had to do," said Craft in regards to the Buccs' fast start. "They (North) are a young team and we felt we had to take it to them right away. If you give a young team confidence, you will be in for a tough night."

After building an early 6-4 lead, Covington ran off 19 straight points before the Panthers scored their next basket with 7:19 left in the first half. Freshman Gene Studebaker had 8 of his game-high 18 points in the run, including two straight 3-pointers to close out the first period.

Covington continued to cruise through the remainder of the half by outscoring the Panthers 15-7 for a commanding 40-13 halftime lead.

The Buccs didn't let up in the second half as Studebaker, Matt McCord and T.J. Warner scored in a 10-2 run to open the third. Three treys and three more buckets later led to a 65-24 Covington lead with 8:00 to play.

With the game well in hand, coach Craft elected to empty the remainder of the bench in the final stanza. The results were the same as the Buccs put 21 more points on the board to record an 86-40 win.

All but two players on the Buccs' roster scored on the nights as Gene Studebaker led the way with 18 points. Matt McCord sank 17 points and Darin Rhoades contributed with 10.

The Panthers were led by Dan Baumbarger with 15 points and Mitchell Heltsley with 14 points on the night.

Covington improves to 11-6 overall and 9-0 in the conference.

The Buccs host Twin Valley South Friday and Miami East on Saturday.
