January 23, 2004 – COVINGTON
The past week is one the Covington Buccaneers would like to forget as they fell by 28 to unbeaten Versailles on Monday and then lost the services of Ross Mohler for the rest of the season a day later. The Buccs were looking to salvage a horrendous week tonight against Tri-Village and they had to do it without one of their most athletic players.

Luckily for the Buccs, the team rallied together and made things go their way. After a tight first half, the Buccs took over in the second half and cruised to a 66-50 victory over the visiting Patriots at Covington High School. The win keeps the Buccs within striking distance of the CCC title as they improve 7-0 in conference play.

The early going was all Dustin Kimmel. The 6'4" sophomore poured in 11 of Covington's first 14 points of the contest. Brady Reck and Gene Studebaker both drilled 3-pointers as well as the Buccs built a 21-13 lead at the end of the first period.

After a Corey Jay layup closed the gap to 21-15 to start the second, Kimmel dropped in a short jumper to push Covington's lead back to 8 points.

Tri-Village matched the Buccs basket-for-basket the rest of the half as Covington went into the locker room with a 32-27 lead.

Corey Jay, a 6'6" junior, single handily brought Tri-Village back to begin the second half. Jay scored the first 5 points of the half to tie the score at 32-32 with 5:30 to go in the third.

After a Covington timeout, the Buccs went of a 14-0 run to push their lead to 46-32 lead with under 1:00 to go in the stanza. Darin Rhoades canned two 3-pointers and Matt McCord knocked down 6 points of his own during the Covington run.

Leading 46-33 to start the final 8:00, Matt McCord and Gene Stduebaker took over the game and led the Buccs to their 7th straight conference win. Studebaker scored 7 points and McCord canned 10 of his game-high 24 points in the final stanza to lead Covington to a 66-50 win.

To go along with McCord's 24 points, Dustin Kimmel dropped in 17 points. Freshman, Gene Studebaker was also in double digits with 12 points despite sitting out for nearly 3 periods after taking a shot in the nose early in the game.

Covington improves to 9-5 on the season and 7-0 in the CCC. Tri-Village drops to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in league action.

Covington travels to face Anna tomorrow night in non-league action.
