February 8, 2005 COVINGTON
Fast starts are becoming a trend for the Covington Buccaneers after a 40-point first half performance last Friday against Twin Valley South and a 38-point first half Tuesday in the home finale against Anna.
The difference between Friday and Tuesday was the Buccs held on after a late Anna surge for the win.
"We let them (Anna) back in it in the third, but was able to play well down the stretch," said Covington coach, Roger Craft. "Richard (Canan) and Darin (Rhoades) hit some big shots when we needed them."
Covington opened the contest with a 10-4 run on three baskets by Rhoades, and two more buckets by Canan and Gene Studebaker.
Anna cut the margin to 12-8 on a basket and two free throws, but two straight treys by Gene Studebaker pushed Covington's lead to 18-8 with 2:15 left in the first.
"Those were two big shots by Gene," said Craft. "We got some early momentum and Anna took it away. Gene got us going again with those threes."
After a Anna timeout, Canan drilled a jumper, Cory Sprankle connected on a put-back, and Nick Christian converted a Canan steal into a lay-up to increase the Buccaneer' margin to 24-8.
Anna closed out the stanza with a bucket and a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 24-12.
Covington continued its hot shooting in the second as Darin Rhoades canned two treys, and Gene Studebaker knocked down his third three-pointer of the contest.
Covington received three more baskets in the stanza at the hands of Dusty Kimmel, Seth Mohler, and Studebaker, but Anna matched the Buccs point-for-point to keep the 12-point difference, 39-27 at the half.
The Rockets made their run in the third stanza by outscoring the Buccs 22-12 in the period. Covington did receive two more three-point baskets from Rhoades, one coming as the third period came to a close.
With Covington leading 51-45 with 8:00 to play, the the momentum was on the Anna side of the floor. The Buccs took it right back, however, as Richard Canan canned a jumper to open the fourth.
The remainder of the game turned into a contest at the free throw line, with Covington making 9 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal the 68-54 win.
Leading the way for the Buccs was Darin Rhoades with a game-high 26 points, and Richard Canan with 18 points. Gene Studebaker dropped in 13 points as well.
Covington pulled down 25 rebounds to 19 for Anna. Seth Mohler led the Buccs with 10 boards.
The Buccs improve to 10-9 on the season, while Anna drops to 9-10.
Covington closes out the regular season Friday as they travel to Tri-County North.
