December 10, 2004 COVINGTON
For three quarters the Covington Buccaneers had everything going their way and appeared to be cruising to their second win of the season in fairly easy fashion. The win eventually came for the Buccs, but Arcanum made it much tougher for Covington down the stretch.
Leading 39-28 after three periods of play, the Buccs had all of the momentum and were just 8:00 from victory. Arcanum had other plans as the Trojans opened the final stanza with two straight treys, which led to a 13-2 run that tied the score at 41-41 with 4:46 to play.
Moments later, another Trojan trey by Ty Cates gave Arcanum a 44-41 lead, which forced a Covington timeout.
Covington responded with a 13-6 run of its own to escape with the win...a win that impressed Covington coach, Roger Craft because of the way his team responded to adversity.
"The kids showed some character tonight," said Craft. "Give Arcanum credit. They came back and put us in a tough situation. But, our kids responded and made plays when they had to. I told the kids during the timeout that all we needed to do was execute, and they did."
Covington opened the contest by taking a 7-2 lead on buckets by Dustin Kimmel and Seth Mohler. Arcanum, on the other hand, could only manage its points at the free throw line. The Trojans didn't connect on a field goal until 4:13 was left on the clock in the opening stanza.
Baskets by Gene Studebaker, Darin Rhoades and Kimmel led to a 16-7 Covington lead after one.
After a pair of Arcanum buckets opened the second stanza, the Buccs went on a 13-0 run to increase the lead to 29-11. Richard Canan and Darin Rhoades combined for 11 points in the Covington run, three of those coming on a Rhoades trey.
Arcanum closed out the half with a short run of its own as they outscored the Buccs 6-2 in the final 2:26 of the half to cut the Covington lead to 31-17 at intermission.
Arcanum gradually chip into Covington's lead in the third period as they open the second half with 5 straight points.
After a Richard Canan jumper and a Corey Sprankle lay-up, the Trojans closed the gap to 39-28 to end the third period.
The Trojans opened the final stanza with ten straight points before two free throws from Kimmel made the score 41-38. Two straight Trojan treys gave Arcanum it's only lead of the contest, 44-41, and force a Covington timeout.
After the brief delay, Covington's Seth Mohler snuck through the back door and received a perfect pass from Richard Canan for the lay-up.
Rhoades connected on a jumper, Kimmel drove from a lay-up, and Mohler canned another basket to give Covington a 50-44 lead with just 1:58 to go.
Covington then increased its lead to 54-44 on a free throw by Canan, a put-back by Mohler and a free throw by Kimmel. Moments later, Kimmel fouled out with .47 left in the game, but Covington connected on 3 of 4 free throws to seal the 57-47 win.
"We made plays when we had to and that was the difference," said Craft. "In our first two games, we made some plays as well, but not enough to get the wins. Tonight, we made enough plays down the stretch to get the win."
Dustin Kimmel led all scorers with a game-high 13 points. Kimmel also recorded 7 rebounds and 6 blocked shots, 3 of his blocks coming in the final 4:00 of the game.
Joining Kimmel with solid games were Seth Mohler, 10 points and 12 rebounds, Darin Rhoades with 11 points, and Gene Studebaker recorded 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Covington narrowly won the battle on the boards with a 32-31 advantage.
The Buccs improve to 2-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Arcanum drops to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in the CCC.
Covington gets back in action on Tuesday as they travel to face last year's state runner-up, Versailles.
