December 3, 2004 – COVINGTON
After two tough losses against two of the better teams in the area a week ago, the Covington Buccaneers were looking to capture their first win of the season against long-time rival, Bradford. It wasn't easy early on, but the Buccaneers had too much fire power and cruised to a 62-27 win at Covington High School.

Covington jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Seth Mohler and Dusty Kimmel, but Bradford answered with six straight points to take a 6-4 lead midway through the first.

The lead changed three more times until Covington took a 11-9 on a 3-pointer by Darin Rhoades at the buzzer to end the first period.

Bradford took its final lead of the contest to open the second as Aaron Szilagyi drilled a three to make the score 12-11.

That would be the only field goal Bradford would score until 3:16 left in the game as Covington's defensive pressure took over the contest.

The Buccs went on a 17-7 run over the remainder of the half as Dusty Kimmel scored 7 of his game-high 18 points in the period. Bradford's remaining first half points came at the free throw line as the 'Roaders connected on 7 of 9 free throws in the second period alone.

The third quarter was all Covington as the Buccs held Bradford without a field goal and to just one point in the entire quarter.

The Buccaneer' offense rolled on as Kimmel, Mohler, Gene Studebaker, Corey Sprankle and Darin Rhoades all found the bottom of the net for the Buccs. Covington connected for 17 points to take a commanding 45-20 lead with 8:00 to play.

Rhoades opened the fourth with his second trey of the contest and buckets by Richard Canan, Kimmel and Sprankle increased the margin to 54-21 as Bradford could only manage a point at the free throw line.

The Railroaders were able to end their drought from the field as Szilagyi broke free after a steel and converted his heroics into a lay-up with 3:16 to go.

Bradford connected on two more buckets down the stretch, but Covington continued its hot shooting to take the 62-27 win.

Led by Dusty Kimmel's 8 rebounds and Seth Mohler's 7 rebounds, Covington controlled the boards the entire evening for an 38-18 advantage.

Covington's defensive pressure was evident by forcing 18 Bradford turnovers, 6 of those forced by Richard Canan, who recorded 6 steals and 8 assists on the night.

Dusty Kimmel led all scorers with 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field. Corey Sprankle had a solid night with a career-high 10 points.

Bradford, who remains winless on the season, was led by Lance Mathieu who recorded a team-high 12 points.

Covington improves to 1-2 on the season and is back in action next Friday as they host Arcanum in another Cross County Conference match-up.
