January 15, 2005 – COVINGTON
Coming off of two straight wins and looking to maintain the momentum, the Covington Buccaneers ran into a big, physical, and talented New Bremen team Saturday night. The end result wasn't what the Buccaneers were looking for as the Cardinal handed Covington a 72-55 defeat.

"They (New Bremen) were big and physical," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "They also went twelve deep and wore us out with their physical play and pressure."

After trailing by double-digits for much of the contest, the Buccs managed to close the gap to 47-42 at the end of the third, and then 55-51 with 3:00 left in the contest.

Unfortunately, Covington spent a lot of energy in the process and appeared to tire down the stretch as New Bremen out scored the Buccs 17-4 in the final 3:00 to seal the win.

"I think our legs were tired down the stretch," described Craft. "It was a combination of things. We had some guys under the weather the past couple of weeks, we didn't execute, and they wore us out by bringing so many kids off the bench and playing physical basketball."

After lighting up the scoreboard for 65 points just 24 hours earlier against National Trail, the Buccs couldn't get their offense going in the first half.

Covington connected on just three first half field goals, but managed to stay in the game at the free throw line by converting on 18 of 24 free throws in the first half.

Still, New Bremen torched the nest for 36 first half points to take a 36-24 lead into the half.

New Bremen increased its margin to 45-28 in the first 3:00 of the second half as Covington continued to struggle finding open looks at the basket.

After a Covington timeout with 5:04 showing on the clock, the Buccs closed out the third on a 12-2 run to close the gap to 47-42. Gene Studebaker scored seven of the Buccaneers' points in the run in the final 2:56 of the period.

The two teams traded baskets through the first 5:00 of the final stanza until Darin Rhoades connected on a jumper to close the gap to 55-51 and force a New Bremen timeout. Unfortunately for the Buccs, Dusty Kimmel and Nick Meyer were forced to the bench after picking up their fifth fouls.

New Bremen took advantage by controlling the inside and forcing the Buccs to foul to stop the clock. The Cardinals converted on 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to close the door on the Buccs.

Darin Rhoades led the Buccs with 20 points, 14 coming at the free throw line. Covington converted on 29 of 38 free throws, while New Bremen connected on 16 of 22 from the line.

New Bremen held the advantage on the boards by pulling down 26 rebounds, 14 offensive, to Covington's 20 rebounds.

Covington turned the ball over 20 times and New Bremen committed 16 turnovers.

"Rebounding and turnovers tell the story," said Craft. "They dominated on the offensive boards and we didn't take care of the ball. We didn't handle their press very well and they got way too many easy baskets in transition."

The Buccs failed to connect from behind the arc on five attempts, while New Bremen canned 7 of 21 treys on the night.

Covington drops to 7-7 on the season and looks to rebounds on Friday on the road against Tri-Village.
