January 30, 2005 – CASSTOWN
The Covington Buccaneers collected perhaps their easiest win of the season, 64-48 over Miami East, Saturday. The win improves Covington to 9-8 overall, and gives them some momentum with three games left before the start of the sectional tournament.

Covington used the momentum they gained Friday in a win over Bethel. Starting the contest the way the ended the night before, Covington opened the game on a 10-2 run.

After Miami East scored the first two points of the contest, Covington scored 10 unanswered points on a jumper by Dusty Kimmel, back-to-back treys by Darin Rhoades and Richard Canan, and then a lay-up by Canan.

All the while, the Buccaneer defense shut down the Vikings and held them scoreless for nearly 3:00 and to just one field goal in the first stanza. Other then a basket by Shirk to open the game, Miami East only managed three more points, all coming at the free throw line on six attempts.

Covington closed out the first with a pair of lay-ups by Rhoades and Gene Studebaker after Viking turnovers.

Miami East managed to get their offense going in the second by scoring 11 points in the stanza. But, the Vikings couldn't contain Covington's Darin Rhoades as the junior shooting guard knocked down two more three-pointers to spark a 14-point quarter and a 28-16 halftime lead.

The Buccaneers put the game away in the third by putting on an offensive show.

Canan opened the scoring with a jumper as Covington went on an 11-2 run. In the run, Rhoades drilled his fourth trey of the contest.

After a pair of free throws slowed the bleeding for the Vikings, Studebaker scored six straight Covington points and Nick Meyer hit on a short jumper to give Covington a 47-22 lead.

After a Rhoades basket and a Meyer free throw, the Vikings closed out the half with some much needed momentum on a pair of baskets to make the score 50-27 as the third came to a close.

The final 8:00 of play turned into a free throw shooting contest as the game took an ugly turn. Forced the slow the clock in hopes of climbing back into the contest, Miami East elected to make the Buccs shoot free throws.

The strategy worked well for the Vikings as Covington managed to only covert on 5 of 12 attempts at the in the final period. Miami East also scored 21 points in the stanza, but it wasn't enough as Covington celebrated a 64-48 win.

Richard Canan led the Buccs with 19 points, while Darin Rhoades dropped in 18 points, including 4 treys. Gene Studebaker scored 10 points, eight coming in the third period. Studebaker and Seth Mohler pulled down six rebounds each.

Covington shot 17 of 37 from two-point range for 46%, 6 of 10 from behind the arc, and 10 of 19 from the free throw line for 52%.

Miami East attempted 26 free throws and made 19 for 73%, but struggled from the field on 10 of 42 two-point shooting, and 3 of 13 from three-point land.

Covington held a significant advantage on the boards, 35-22, but committed 16 turnovers to Miami East's 11 turnovers.

Covington (9-8) travels to Twin Valley South this Friday.
