December 30, 2004 – MARIA STEIN
The Covington Buccaneers closed out 2004 by traveling to Maria Stein to face the Marion Local Flyers. The end result wasn't what the Buccs had in mind as they surrendered a season-high 66 points in a ten-point loss.

The host Flyers connected on seven treys in the first half to cruise to a 36-24 halftime lead.

Meanwhile, Covington's Richard Canan kept the Buccs within striking distance with 13 of his 21 points coming in the first half. Canan also, connected on three first half treys as the rest of the Covington team only managed 11 points as a group.

After Marion Local extended its lead to 39-24 on a free throw by Kyle Moeder and a jumper by Curtis Moeller, the Buccs received a spark by Darin Rhoades. The senior guard connected on two straight treys to close the gap to 39-30.

Marion Local responded with six straight points, but Canan and Rhoades scored seven unanswered points to make the score 45-37 with under 1:00 left in the stanza.

The Flyers took the momentum right back with a basket by Wes Everman and a pair of free throws by Ryan Winner to increase the lead to 49-37 with 8:00 to play.

Marion Local increased its lead to 59-43 midway through the final stanza as Everman, Moeder, and Ryan Stucke all found the bottom of the net.

Covington gradually chipped into the Flyer lead as Darin Rhoades scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the final stanza.

The Buccs closed to within eight points on a layup by Seth Mohler with 2:10 left in the game, but that was as close as Covington would get. Marion converted on six straight free throws down the stretch to close out the contest with a 66-56 win.

Covington only had five players score on the evening with Rhoades and Canan combining for 43 of the Buccs' 56 points. Rhoades and Canan also accounted for all six of Covington's treys as both connected on three attempts each.

The Flyers, meanwhile, had four players in double figures with Ryan Winner leading the way with 16 points.

Covington converted 15 out of 18 free throws, while Marion Local shot 26 free throws and converted 19 into points. Ten of Covington's free throws came at the hands of Darin Rhoades as he connected on 10 of 10 from the line.

Marion Local also held a slim rebounding edge, 22-20.

The Buccs drop to 5-5 on the season and face another road test on Friday, January 7th against long-time rival Newton.
