January 8, 2005 – COVINGTON
After only scoring 43 points Friday night in a stunning defeat at the hands of the Newton Indians, the Covington Buccaneers rebounded by erupting for a season-high 73 points in a 73-60 win over Milton Union, Saturday.

"I'm glad the kids came out and responded the way they did," said Covington coach, Roger Craft. "After the way we played Friday night, it was good to see the kids come out and play hard."

After honoring the new inductees into the Covington Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the game, the Buccs waisted little time putting points on the board.

Darin Rhoades drilled two first quarter treys as the Buccs built a 17-14 lead at the end of one period.

Rhoades connected on a third trey to start the second stanza, but Milton battled back to take a 22-20 lead with 5:58 left in the half on a pair of three-pointers by Ryan Barker and Sam Chiappone.

The lead changed hands seven more times before the half until Covington took command with 3:00 to go.

Trailing 32-31, Covington scored six unanswered points on buckets by Richard Canan and Corey Sprankle, and a pair of free throws. At the break, the Buccs held a 37-32 advantage.

The second half opened with a trey by Canan to give Covington a 40-32 lead.

After a basket by Milton's Ryan Paul, Canan drilled another three-pointer to push the Buccaneer lead to 43-34.

The Bulldogs came back once again with six straight points, including a trey by Dustin Jay to cut the Covington lead to 43-40 and force a Buccaneer timeout.

The Buccaneers responded by outscoring Milton Union 11-4 over the remainder of the third to take a ten-point lead, 54-44.

The final stanza turned into a battle at the free throw line as 17 fouls were committed in the final 8:00. Covington scored 19 points over the remainder of the contest, including 9 points on free throws on 15 attempts in the stanza.

Milton attempted 16 free throws in the final quarter, also converting on 9 attempts.

Three players fouled out in the contest. Two Bulldog players and one player from Covington's roster was forced to the bench in the final period after picking up their fifth fouls.

In the end, the Bulldogs couldn't chip into the Buccaneer lead as the final score read 73-60 in Covington's favor.

Leading the way for Covington was Richard Canan with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Darin Rhoades chipped in 19 points, and Corey Sprankle dropped in 11 points and pilled down a team-high 6 boards.

Covington also received a significant contribution from its bench with a combined 11 points and solid defense.

"Nick (Christian), Gill (Michael Gilmore), and Meyer (Nick Meyer) all gave us quality minutes tonight," said Craft. "We had a talk about playing aggressive and not being tentative and these kids played aggressive basketball. Corey (Sprankle), Richard (Canan), Darin (Rhoades), Dusty (Kimmel), Seth (Mohler), they all played well and tonight."

Milton was led by Mitchell Evans with 20 points as the Bulldogs connected on 7 of 22 three-pointers on the evening.

Both teams pulled down 22 rebounds, but Covington held the advantage in turnovers 12-16.

The Buccaneers converted on 17 of 29 free throws throughout the contest, while Milton connected in 13 of 24.

Covington improves to 6-6 overall and Milton drops to 4-8 after coming in with a two-game winning streak.

The Buccaneers host National Trail in Cross County Conference action next Saturday.
