December 17, 2004 – UNION CITY
The Covington Buccaneers basketball team had three days to think about their disappointing two-point loss at the hands of Versailles Tuesday before facing Mississinawa Valley Friday. In a sloppy affair, the Buccs seemed to still have the Tigers on their minds as they committed a season-high 20 turnovers. Still, the Buccs captured a 47-35 win to improve to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in Cross County Conference play.

"Twenty turnovers isn't very good," said Covington coach, Roger Craft. "We have to get that corrected in a hurry."

In a low-scoring first period, the Buccs took a 9-8 lead on baskets by Richard Canan, Dusty Kimmel, two free throws by Seth Mohler, and a three-pointer by Darin Rhoades.

Mississinawa connected on a jumper by Wes Gelhaus, a three-point play by Brady Rogers and a trey by Kyle Linder.

Kimmel started off the second stanza with a lay-up, which was matched by a Blackhawk basket by Dusty Lyons to make the score 11-10.

Covington then went on an 11-2 run as Rhoades, Kimmel, Canan and Studebaker all connected on buckets. Mohler also hit on 1 of 2 free throws to increase Covington's lead to 22-12 with under 2:00 left in the half.

Linder stopped the bleeding with a jumper, but Kimmel responded with a lay-up to give Covington a 24-14 lead at the half.

Darin Rhoades got the Buccs rolling with a trey to open the second half. Canan and Kimmel followed up with a pair of baskets to increase Covington's lead to 31-14 and force a Mississinawa timeout with only 1:27 gone in the half.

The Blackhawks scored four straight points on a free throw by Gelhaus and a trey by Linder to make the score 31-18.

After a Mohler basket, Mississinawa's Levi Wicker canned a jumper and a free throw, but baskets by Kimmel and Rhoades increased Covington's lead to 37-21 with just seconds left in the stanza.

The Blackhawks gained some momentum heading into the final stanza as Jason Claywell drilled a trey at the buzzer to close the Covington lead to 37-24 with 8:00 to play.

Linder drilled another trey to open the fourth and suddenly the Blackhawks were within striking distance, 37-27.

Studebaker and Kimmel hit on back-to-back possessions and another Studebaker jumper after a Blackhawk free throw made the score 43-28 with 5:02 left in the game.

Wicker scored on two straight free throws, Lyons connected on a lay-up, and Linder drilled his fourth trey of the game after a Studebaker basket to bring the Blackhawks within 10 with under 2:00 to play.

Needing to slow the clock, the Blackhawks elected to send the Buccs to the foul line throughout the remainder of the contest. Covington couldn't take advantage as they only connected on 2 of 5 free throw attempts down the stretch.

Mississinawa also didn't take advantage of its opportunities as they misfired on four attempts from behind the arch in the final 2:00.

In the end, the Buccs walked off the floor with the 12-point win.

"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take a win anytime we can get it," said Craft. "Anytime you can get a win in the other teams' gym, it's a good win."

Leading the way for the Buccs was Dusty Kimmel with a game-high 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Darin Rhoades and Gene Studebaker both dropped in 10 points each and Seth Mohler pulled down 7 boards.

Covington held the advantage on the boards as they pulled down 30 rebounds to Mississinawa's total of 18 boards.

Covington looks to capture another win Saturday night as they host the 6-0 Tipp City Red Devils.

"We'll have to play much better against Tipp," said Craft. "They are on a roll right now and they have some very talented players. They are also well coached, so we'll have to come ready to play. The kids are looking forward to the challenge, so I think we'll be at our best."
