January 14, 2005 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers put together their most impressive performance of the season for a 65-41 win over National Trail at Covington High School, Friday night. With the win, the Buccs improve to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the CCC.

Sparked by a game-high 29 points by junior, Darin Rhoades, and a 12-point, 15-rebound night from another junior, Dusty Kimmel, the Buccs controlled much of the contest after taking a 33-25 halftime lead.

"Darin shot the ball very well tonight," complemented Buccaneer coach, Roger Craft. "He played under control and within himself. Also, Kimmel played one of his better games. It's nice to have a strong guy inside who wants the ball."

It took the Buccaneers a while to get going offensively as National Trail took a 10-8 lead late in the first stanza.

Nick Meyer then gave the Buccs their first lead of the contest, 12-10 on a basket inside and a pair of free throws moments later.

After Trail connected on a pair of free throws to tie the score, Darin Rhoades drilled a jumper to give Covington a 14-12 lead as the first period came to a close.

Tim Beck opened the second period with five straight points to put the Blazers on top 17-14, but a Rhoades trey again notched the score at 17-17.

National Trail took its final lead of the contest on a pair of free throws by Beck as Covington went on a 6-0 run, sparked by a second Rhoades trey, to take a 23-19 lead.

Covington closed out the remainder of the half by outscoring the Blazers 10-6 as Rhoades, Kimmel, Richard Canan, and Gene Studebaker all connected for Buccaneer points for a 33-25 halftime lead.

The Buccaneer defense stepped up the pressure in the third period by holding the Blazers to just six points in the stanza.

"We played well defensively in the second half," said Craft. "We were physical and contested well. (Nick) Meyer, (Seth) Mohler, and (Dusty) Kimmel did a nice job on (Tim) Beck. Holding him to 11 points big."

Meanwhile, Rhoades drilled three jumpers and Kimmel connected on two baskets in the stanza to lead the Buccs to a 43-31 lead with 8:00 to play.

Covington didn't sit on its lead in the final stanza as the Buccs poured in 22 points in the fourth.

After Richard Canan connected on two jumpers, Rhoades, Seth Mohler, Cory Sprankle, and Kimmel all scored fourth quarter points for the Buccs. Covington also made 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to ensure a 65-41 win.

Along with the solid nights of Rhoades and Kimmel, the Buccs received a balanced efforts from the rest of the roster. Richard Canan connected for 8 points and dished out 7 assists, Gene Studebaker returned from an injury with 4 points, but more importantly, hustle on both ends of the floor as evident by his effort in chasing a loose ball into the scorers table in the first half.

Covington held a slim rebounding advantage, 29-27 and forced 13 turnovers while only committing 8 turnovers.

"I'm proud of the effort the kids gave tonight," concluded Craft. "I thought we played as hard as we've played all year. This was a nice win and we need it to carry over to tomorrow night against New Bremen."

Covington looks to extend their two-game winning streak against New Bremen tomorrow night.
