January 21, 2005 NEW MADISON
The Covington Buccaneers struggled offensively Friday night and it cost them a 43-40 loss at the hands of Tri-Village.
The Buccs only connected on 13 of 32 two-point shots, 4 of 12 from behind the arc, and 2 of 6 from the free throw line throughout four frustrating periods.
Still, Covington was within striking distance in the end, but Tri-Villages' big man, Cory Jay sealed the deal with a lay-up after sliding behind the Buccaneer defense with 15 seconds left.
"It's disappointing," said Covington coach Roger Craft of the loss and a 40-point offensive performance. "We struggled against their zone and didn't shoot the ball well."
The night started off as bad as it ended for the Buccs as Dusty Kimmel was forced out of the game after taking an accidental elbow to the eye just 15 seconds into the game.
Tri-Village took advantage as Cory Jay scored all eight first period points for the Patriots.
Covington managed to keep pace with a trey by Richard Canan, and three jumpers by Darin Rhoades to take a 9-8 lead after one.
Kimmel returned in the second stanza and made an immediate impact. The 6' 4" junior, sparked a 7-0 Covington run with a three-point play to open the stanza. Gene Studebaker and Darin Rhoades canned jumpers to give the Buccs a 16-8 lead and force a Tri-Village timeout with 5:59 left in the half.
The Patriots responded with a trey by Josh Fisherback to cut the margin to 16-11, but a Nick Christian put-back pushed the lead back to 18-11.
In the process, Cory Jay picked up his third foul and was forced to the bench with 5:00 left in the half. Covington couldn't take advantage as they misfired on three straight one-and-one attempts at the free throw line.
Tri-Village gradually closed the gap as Dan Foreman drilled a jumper, and Sam Lindamood connected on a trey and a lay-up to tie the score at 18-18 with 2:48 left on the clock.
After a Kimmel jumper made the score 20-18, the Patriots tied the score at the half on a jumper by Cameron Quinn.
Darin Rhoades opened the second half with a jumper, but the Buccs didn't score for the next 6:00 of the contest.
Tri-Village took advantage by scoring eight straight points to take a 28-20 lead with 1:59 left in the third.
Covington's Nick Meyer broke the ice with a short jumper, but the Patriots responded with a lay-up by Lindamood to take a 30-24 lead with just 30 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Needing some momentum heading into the final 8:00, Gene Studebaker drilled a three-pointer right before the buzzer to bring Covington within striking distance, 30-27.
Richard Canan opened the fourth with another Covington trey to tie the score at 30-30, but Tri-Village went on a 7-4 run to take a 37-34 lead with under 3:00 to play.
Darin Rhoades gave the Buccs their first lead since the opening seconds of the second half on back-to-back possessions. The junior shooting guard drilled three-pointer and then picked the pocket of the Patriots and drove in for the lay-up to give the Buccs a 39-37 lead with 2:48 left.
Unfortunatley for the Buccs, that would be their final field goal of the contest.
Cory Jay tied the score on a pair of free throws, and Lindamood drilled a jumper to give the Patriots a two-point lead, 41-39.
Covington had a chance to tie the score with 30 seconds left in the contest at the free throw line, but the second attempt bounced off the iron and into Cory Jay's hands.
The Patriots then sealed the contest as Jay snuck through the back side for the lay-up and a 43-40 win.
On the night, Covington only converted on 4 of 13 shots in the paint, 3 of 11 in the first half.
Tri-Village held a significant advantage on the boards by pulling down 20 rebounds to Covington's 12. Cory Jay and Cameron Quinn both pulled down 7 rebounds for Tri-Village.
Leading the way for the Buccs was Darin Rhoades with a team-high 15 points. Tri-Village was led by Cory Jay with a game-high 20 points.
Covington drops to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the Cross County Conference. They look to rebound Saturday in the final home game of the season against Anna.
