December 16, 2005 ARCANUM
The Covington Buccaneers found themselves in a dog fight with a gutsy Arcanum Trojans team Friday night, but managed to will their way to a narrow 47-46 victory.
"We'll take it (the win)," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Every time we go over their (Arcanum) it's a battle, so it's always nice when you can come away with a win."
Covington struggled shooting the ball throughout the evening, making just 17 of 46 two-point attempts and 1 of 6 from behind the arc. Much of the Buccs' struggles were attributed to the Arcanum defense.
"They (Arcanum) are very quick and aggressive," continued Craft. "We missed too many shots inside the paint tonight."
Despite the offensive struggles Covington managed to hold a slim 14-12 lead after one period of play as Darin Rhoades scored 6 of his game-high 18 points in the stanza.
Covington's struggles increased in the second stanza and it only managed six points on baskets by Dusty Kimmel, Seth Mohler and Rhoades.
The Trojans too a 23-20 half time lead thanks to two treys by Mike Eilerman and baskets by Justin Rench, Trevor Moore and Ty Cates.
Arcanum opened the the second half with a pair of baskets by Moore and Eilerman to stretch its lead to 27-20, the largest lead for either team in the contest.
But, Covington battled back to close the margin to 31-30 by the end of the period thanks to two buckets each by Rhoades and Gene Studebaker and a put back by Seth Mohler.
Covington opened the final 8:00 by taking its first lead since the early moments of the second period as Dusty Kimmel tipped in his own missed shot.
The lead changed hands eight more times in the final period until Seth Mohler scored on a lay-up with 46 seconds left to give the Buccs a 44-43 lead.
On Arcanum's next possession Darin Rhoades stole the ball and was sent to the free throw line after being fouled. Rhoades canned both free throws to increase Covington's lead to 46-43 with 33.9 seconds left.
Covington then had five more attempts at the free throw line to seal the game, but the Buccs only converted on one attempt to push the lead to 47-43 with 6 seconds left.
Arcanum's Darren Printz was then fouled on a three-point attempt, which gave the Trojans life with just 0.3 seconds showing on the clock. Printz made the first two attempts to make the score 47-45. While attempting to get a favorable bounce off the rim for a potential put back on his third shot, the ball bounced through the net making the final score 47-46 in favor of Covington.
"This was the type of game we would have lost a year ago," said Craft. "I credit the kids for hanging in there and battling to the end. I give Arcanum credit too because they played hard as well, but we made enough plays at the end to get the win."
Covington was led by Darin Rhoades with a game-high 18 points and 10 points from Seth Mohler. Mohler also pulled down 10 rebounds, while Dusty Kimmel grabbed 12 boards of his own. Rhoades also crashed the boards as well by grabbing 8 rebounds.
Although leading all scorers with 18 points, Darin Rhoades drew praise for his defensive performance.
"Rhoades is know for his offense, but he had a very nice game defensively," complemented Craft.
The Buccs' dominance on the boards also had a significant impact. The Buccs pulled down 35 rebounds to 24 for Arcanum, including 16 on the offensive end. Much of Covington's success on the boards can be attributed to the play of Mohler, Kimmel and Rhoades, who combined for 22 rebounds.
Covington improves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Buccs host Mississinawa Valley next Friday.
