December 9, 2005 – COVINGTON
Covington coach Roger Craft had the ultimate complement for the Bradford Railroaders after the Buccs' 80-31 win Friday night.

"I have to hand it to them because they played hard for 32 minutes and that's what this game is all about," complemented Craft. "They (Bradford) will continue to get better because they play hard."

As hard as Bradford played they just couldn't find a way to stop the weapons Covington had at it's disposal. The Buccs had four players score in double figures and five others finding the scoring column as well.

Plus, Covington's size and physical strength was evident as the Buccs pulled down 49 rebounds to Bradford's 17 and held a 23-7 rebounding edge on the offensive boards.

"I love the balance we had tonight," said Craft. "Having four players score in double digits, two players score nine and one player score eight shows a balanced team. I'm very please with how we moved the ball around tonight."

Every other statistical category went in the Buccs' favor as Covington only turned the ball over 9 times, while Bradford committed 17 turnovers. Also, the Buccs shot 37 free throws to five attempts for Bradford, making 21 free throws to the Railroaders' three.

"We were very patient offensively and took care of the ball," continued Craft. "Our offensive philosophy is inside-out and we're getting there. When our big man (Dusty Kimmel) leads the team in assists with five, that shows we executed the offense."

Covington took the opening tip and within seconds Darin Rhoades drilled a trey to get the Buccs going.

A free throw by Gene Studebaker and a Canan trey and a lay-up put the Buccs up 9-0.

Bradford scored its first basket with 4:12 left in the opening stanza as Tyler Huffman sliced through for a lay-up to cut the margin to 9-2.

The Buccs then outscored the Railroaders 14-2 over the remainder of the period to take a 23-4 lead.

Bradford found some success in the second period finding open shots as it scored 11 points in the stanza. However, Covington continued its hot hand by dropping in 23 second quarter points to take a 46-15 lead at the half.

The host Railroaders couldn't catch a break in the first 8:00 of the second half as they only converted on one field goal in the third period, a jumper by Aaron Szsilagyi.

Covington, on the other hand, continued to take advantage of second and third shot opportunities for 22 points in the third to take a 66-17 lead.

If any point in the contest showed what type of heart Bradford played with, it was the final 8:00 of the contest. The Railroaders scored 14 points in the stanza, including treys from Zach Barga, Aaron Szilagyi and Daniel Miller.

On the Covington side of the court Derek Brumbaugh, Corey Patty, Corey Sprankle and Nick Meyer accounted for all 14 points in the final period as the Buccs took an 80-31 win over their arch rivals.

"Our bench gave us some very valuable minutes tonight," said Craft. "They (the bench players) are starting to understand that we need them in order to be successful. It's not only scoring, but rebounding, playing solid defense and executing. The kids off the bench did all of that tonight."

The four players who scored in double figures for the Buccs were Gene Studebaker (14), Darin Rhoades (13), Richard Canan (11), and Corey Spankle (10). Dusty Kimmel and Seth Mohler both scored 9 points, while Derek Brumbaugh came off the bench and scored 8 points.

Bradford was led by Daniel Miller with 7 points, Zach Barga with 6 points, and Aaron Szilagyi with 5 points.

Covington improves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the CCC, while Bradford is still looking for its first win at 0-3 and 0-2 in the conference.

The Buccs host Versailles in their home opener, while the Railroaders host Troy Christian. Both games are Saturday.
