December 3, 2005 FAIRLAWN
The Covington Buccaneers escaped the unfriendly confines of the "Hanger" at Fairlawn High School with a narrow 67-62 win.
In a physical contest that saw a total of 42 combined fouls called on both teams, the Buccaneers made enough plays down the stretch to pull out a win.
The host Jets opened the game with a jumper by Brian Moon, who would go on to have a big night with a game-high 24 points, including four conversions from behind the arc.
The Buccs responded with baskets by Dusty Kimmel and Richard Canan, but a pair of free throws by Colby Graves tied the score again at 4-4.
After both teams traded long range treys by Darin Rhoades for Covington and Moon for Fairlawn, the visiting Buccaneers outscored the Jest 13-7 over the remainder of the stanza to take a 20-14 lead.
Kimmel, who scored eight first period points, opened the second with a put back to increase the Covington margin to 22-14.
Fairlawn responded by going on the biggest run of the contest. All eleven points in the run came at the hands of Brian Moon and Craig Henman as each connect on a trey and a jumper, plus a Henman free throw.
Gene Studebaker stopped the bleeding for the Buccs with a lay-up and then gave the Buccs a one point lead with two free throws, 26-25.
The lead changed four more time before the half with Covington taking the 30-29 lead at the break on a jumper by Darin Rhoades.
The Jets let the bombs fly in the third period by connecting on six treys in the stanza.
Henman started the three-point showcase to begin the second half scoring, but a short runner by Darin Rhoades tied the score at 32-32.
After a short lay-in by Herman gave the Jets the lead again, Richard Canan launched a trey of his own to give the Buccs a one-point lead, 35-34.
On the next trip down the floor the Jets hit on a bomb again. This time Brian Moon spotted up from the corner and then Colby Graves joined the three-point party to make the score 37-35 in favor of Fairlawn.
After a Rhoades free throw cut the margin to one, Moon canned a trey to increase the lead Fairlawn lead to four points, 40-36.
Covington's Gene Studebaker then scored on a three-point play the traditional way, by driving in for a lay-up and canning the free throw after being fouled.
Fairlawn again responded with a trey from A.J. Wilson to push the lead back to four, 43-39, but the Buccs outscored the Jets 10-3 over the remainder of the third to take a 51-46.
Fairlawn couldn't maintain its long-range success in the final stanza as they only connect on 2 of 8 attempts down the stretch.
Covington took advantage as Richard Canan and Gene Studebaker connected on treys, Studebaker scored on a short jumper, Seth Mohler connected on a lay-up, and the Buccs converted on six of ten free throws to take a 67-52 win.
The win, although not the most stylish, was one the Buccs were happy to receive.
"This wasn't the prettiest game ever, but we'll take it," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "This is a tough place to play and we know when we come in here it's going to be a battle."
Darin Rhoades echoed Crafts' remarks as to the importance of gaining a win in the "Hanger".
"We'll take it," said Rhoades. "It (the style of the game) wasn't what we planned, but we'll take it and come back Monday focused on getting better."
Four Buccaneers reached double digits in scoring with Darin Rhoades leading the way with 21 points. Gene Studebaker connected for 15 points, Richard Canan scored 13, and Dusty Kimmel dropped in 10 points.
For Fairlawn, two players accounted for 45 of its 62 points as Brian Moon scored a game-high 24 points and Craig Henman connected for 21 points.
Covington held the edge in rebounding with 10 offensive boards and 22 overall to Fairlawn's 5 offensive and 17 for the game. Dusty Kimmel pulled won 6 boards, while Gene Studebaker and Seth Mohler both pulled down 5 each.
The Buccs also held a slim advantage in turnovers as they committed 13 to Fairlawn's 16.
Covington gains its first win of the season and is back in action next Friday at Cross County Conference rival Bradford.
