January 7, 2006 – WEST MILTON
Rebounding + Forced Turnovers = Easy baskets in transition. That was the remedy for success Saturday night for the Covington Buccaneers as they steamrolled Milton Union 72-47 in non-conference action.

Covington surged to a 29-5 lead at the end of the first period thanks to a stingy defense, which forced six Milton turnovers in the first period. The Buccs ran up and down the floor for 17 points coming off of transition, much due to the pressure defense applied at the point by Richard Canan.

"We feed off of Richard's pressure," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "He forced some early turnovers and we rebounded really well, which allowed us to get out and get some easy baskets in transition. I'm pleased with the way we came out and took it to them early."

Covington kept the pressure on in the second period as a new face stepped up with seven key points in the stanza. Nick Meyer came off the bench and dropped in three buckets and a free throw to lead Covington to a 44-19 lead at half time.

"We've been waiting for Nick to break through," said Craft. "It's just a matter of him gaining the confidence in himself that we have in him. He came in and gave us an outstanding effort off the bench, not only scoring but defensively and on the boards. Hopefully this is a breakout game for him and it carries through over the rest of the season."

Milton, playing without standout Mitch Evans, showed competitive heart to open the third period by going on 7-2 run to close the gap to 46-26.

Covington responded with a trey by Darin Rhoades two short jumpers by Dusty Kimmel to take the momentum back and increase the margin to 53-26. The Buccs then extended the lead to 59-35 on a pair of baskets by Seth Mohler and a jumper by Gene Studebaker to close out the stanza.

"They were playing without one of their better players and I'm sure that had an affect on them," said Craft. "But, I'm very pleased that we kept the pressure on and never let them back into the game. That's a sign of a good team."

Covington closed the show in the fourth quarter with baskets by Rhoades, Kimmel, Meyer, Corey Patty and Derek Brumbaugh.

"Not only did Nick (Meyer) give us a solid game off the bench, but all of our guys who came off the bench gave us some solid minutes," described Craft. "Derek, (Corey) Sprankle, (Corey) Patty, and Drew (Craft) all came in and contributed when we needed them."

The Buccs had their most dominating night of the season on the boards by pulling down 45 total rebounds and 21 rebounds on the offensive end. The Bulldogs managed 25 rebounds, 8 offensive.

Covington had five players score in double figures with Darin Rhoades leading the way with 16 points. Nick Meyer, Gene Studebaker, Darin Rhoades and Seth Mohler each dropped in 11 points each. Mohler was the leader on the boards with 13 rebounds, while Studebaker contributed with 9 rebounds.

With virtually everyone on the Covington roster contributing, Richard Canan was most likely the most valuable player due to his overall play. Canan had an outstanding night with 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 points.

Covington connected on 9-12 free throws on the night and dropped in three treys.

The Buccs (8-1) return home Friday in a key conference match-up against rival Newton.
