December 23, 2005 COVINGTON
When the 2005-06 basketball schedule came out, everyone pointed directly at the holiday break as the toughest part of Covington's schedule. That's because of back-to-back games with Russia and Marion Local, two teams the Buccs have had a difficult time with in the past.
With those two games just days away, the Buccs first had to stay focused on a dangerous Mississinawa Valley team...and they did, coming away with an impressive 64-48 victory.
The Buccs, who trailed 24-23 at the half, outscored the Blackhawks 22-12 in the third period and continued to pull away for the victory.
Junior Gene Studebaker had a huge night for the Buccaneers, dropping down a game-high 22 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out four assists.
"Gene had and outstanding game," said Covington coach Roger Craft.
Everything didn't always go Covington's way as the Buccs struggled behind the arc throughout the evening. Covington only managed just one trey on ten attempts...that one by Richard Canan.
But, as they have done well over the early part of the season, the Buccs held the edge on the boards by pulling down 28 rebounds to Mississinawa Valley's 22.
The Buccaneer defense was also stellar as evident by the second half performance in containing the Blackhawk shooters for just 24 second half points.
"Dusty Kimmel gave us a nice defensive effort," said Craft. "Richard Canan also played a good defensive game and found the open man on offense with seven assists."
Kimmel held Mississinawa's big man Josh Setser to just four points on the evening and also had an impact on the boards, pulling down six key rebounds to go along with his 10 points.
Darin Rhoades continued to shoot the ball well with 17 points. The senior also managed to find his way to the free throw line on a regular basis as he connected on 7 of 13 free throws.
The Buccs finished the night converting on 21 of 37 two-point attempts, but struggled a bit from the free throw line by making 19 of 34 attempts.
The Blackhawks converted on 16 of 29 two-point attempts and were just 4 of 16 from behind the arc. Mississinawa also struggled from the free throw line...making just 4 of 10 attempts.
The Buccs (5-0, 3-0) return after celebrating Christmas with two critical non-conference games to close out 2005. On Tuesday Covington hosts Russia and Friday Marion Local comes to town.
Much like the Versailles game two weeks ago, the next two contests will be good indicators of how good this team can be.
Mississinawa drops to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCC.
