Febuary 2, 2007 – ARCANUM
The Covington Buccaneers captured their sixth straight win of the season with a 65-57 win over Arcanum, Friday. One of the primary reasons for the Buccs' recent success has been the play of their bench.

In the past six games there has been a number of players step up and contribute. Tonight, it was Jordy Burelison.

The junior guard scored a career-high 12 points, including three timely three-pointers. None was bigger than a huge trey in the second quarter with Gene Studebaker on the bench after turning an ankle.

"Jordy had a big night," praised Roger Craft. "He hit some big shots for us tonight and we needed them."

Covington built an early 13-10 lead, but a scary moment occurred with 3:30 left in the first quarter. Studebaker turned an ankle, forcing him to the bench for nearly 8:00 of action.

Burelison came in and drilled a trey to spark the Buccs to a 9-4 run while Studebaker nursed his ankle. Derek Brumbaugh connected on three buckets as well as Covington increased its lead to 22-14.

"That was huge for us to increase our lead like that," Craft said. "Jordy hit a big three and Brummy (Brumbaugh) made some big baskets to keep us out in front."

Studebaker returned to the floor with 3:45 left in the half and it was Burelison who benefitted from his presence. Studebaker found Jordy behind the three-point line for another trey to push Covington's lead to 27-17.

Moments later Studebaker canned a jumper and then closed out the first half with a jumper at the buzzer to maintain the ten-point Covington lead at the half.

"It was nice to see the other guys step up," said Craft. "We extended our lead at the half on a basket by Gene, but the other guys picked up their level of play to keep us going."

Arcanum chipped into the Covington lead throughout the third period and eventually cut the margin to five points midway through the frame, 43-38.

Covington was able to keep the Trojans at bey on a Seth Mohler basket and another by Derek Brumbaugh to increase the lead to 47-41 with one period to play.

Arcanum pressed Covington into some untimely turnovers in an effort to steal a victory and eventually closed the gap to 56-52 midway through the period.

But Studebaker found the hot hand down the stretch to score 12 of his game-high 24 points in the period as the Buccs claimed a 65-57 win.

Covington connected on 20 of 34 field goal attempts for a season-high 58.8 shooting percentage.

The Buccs were also 6 of 10 from behind the arc and connected on 19 of 25 free throws for 76 percent. The 19 converted free throws was also a season high for the Buccs.

"We shot the ball very well tonight," said Craft. "When you can shoot nearly 60 percent from the field you have a good chance to win."

Arcanum held a rebounding edge on Covington by pulling down 23 rebounds to 18 for the Buccs, including a 10-3 advantage on the offensive boards.

Both team committed 17 turnovers.

Studebaker led all players with 24 points, while Burelison and Seth Mohler dropped in 14 and 10 respectively.

Arcanum received solid offensive performances from Nathan Greve with 18 points and Caleb Means with 17 points.

The victory improves Covington's record to 11-7 overall and 8-2 in Cross County Conference play. Arcanum drops to 11-6 and 6-4 in league action.

Covington has a week off to prepare for another critical conference game next Friday at Twin Valley South.
