December 2, 2006 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers' achilles heel over the past few years has been converting at the charity stripe.

The trend continued Saturday as Covington went through a 1 for 12 stretch from the line and only converted on 8 of 28 free throws for the game.

"Obviously we didn't shoot very well from the free throw line," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "It (the poor free throw shooting) made the game closer than it needed to be."

Still, Covington managed to overcome its shortcomings and pull away down the stretch for a 57-42 non-conference win over a gritty Fairlawn team.

"We played hard," Craft continued. "There's no problem with our intensity. We just need to shoot better than how we did tonight."

Covington looked to be in for an easy night as it jumped out to a 13-2 lead midway through the first period. Seth Mohler, Derek Brumbaugh and Corey Patty were the workhorses, accounting for all 13 Buccaneer points.

Fairlawn managed to close out the stanza with six more points, but Jordy Burelison drilled two three pointers to match the Jet's effort. The second trey came at the buzzer to give the Buccs a 19-8 lead after one.

Covington increased its lead to 27-12 on six Gene Studebaker points and a jumper by Derek Brumbaugh, but foul trouble struck two Buccaneer starters. Both Studebaker and Mohler were forced to the bench with three fouls a piece.

"Having those two on the bench watching isn't good," said Craft. "We need to keep those guys on the floor because they make things happen."

Fairlawn took advantage of Mohler and Studebaker's absence by closing out the half on a 10-1 run as the Buccaneers failed to convert on five of six free throws in the final 3:00 of the half.

"We had a lull there late in the second quarter that allowed them to get some momentum and back into the game," Craft explained. "We have to find a way to prevent runs like that."

With the double digit lead cut to 28-22 to start the second half, things got worse for Covington 26 seconds into the third period. Mohler picked up his fourth foul and was back on the bench watching the action.

"It (Mohler out in foul trouble) just meant someone else had to step up," Craft said.

Corey Patty and Derek Brumbaugh did just that by canning two jumpers a piece to push the Covington lead to 36-26 with 4:13 to play in the third.

After a Fairlawn trey closed the gap to 36-29, Gene Studebaker took over the game and led the Buccs to victory.

First, Studebaker brought the Covington crowd to its feet as he dove seven rows into the stands in an attempt to save an errant pass.

Then, he converted an in-bounds alleyoop pass from Derek Brumbaugh, skying above the rim to tip the ball in.

"Geno decided it was time to take over the game and that's what he did," Craft described.

Studebaker scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the final 10:00 of the contest, including a back-breaking trey with 3:36 to go in the game to put Covington up by nine, 49-40.

Corey Patty and Derek Brumbaugh also scored down the stretch as Covington pulled away for the 57-42 win.

As much as Studebaker impacted on the game, the difference likely came down to rebounds and turnovers. The Buccaneers dominated the boards with 40 total rebounds and 18 offensive boards to 22 and 7 for Fairlawn.

The Buccaneers also took care of the ball better, committing 9 turnovers to 14 for Fairlawn.

Studedebaker recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Derek Brumbaugh also had a big night with 13 points and 10 rebounds, despite missing much of the third period due to a bloody mouth. Corey Patty also scored in double figures with 11 points.

The victory improves Covington's record to 2-0 on the young season as a trip to Miami East next Friday is next on the schedule.
