The bitter taste of a one-point defeat to Houston in the sectional finals still lingers in the mouths of the returning Buccaneers as they approach the 2006-07 basketball season.
The returning squad has some big shoes to fill with the loss of five seniors from an 18-5 team of a year ago. But, enough talent remains to succeed and the schedule laid out for the Buccs will prepare them for a possible run in the tournament.
The Buccs open the season with two straight home games as they look to get off to a fast start against National Trail and Fairlawn in the first weekend of the season.
Covington opens up its first of nine road games in 06-07 against Miami East. The Vikings enter its first basketball season as part of the Cross County Conference.
A second straight road game follows as the Buccs travel to Versailles for a critical non-conference game. Covington and Versailles has had some intense battles over the years and the one on December 9th should be no different.
Perhaps Covington's stiffest test of the season comes on December 16 as former Buccaneer and current Tipp City coach Matt Pond brings his high-powered Red Devils to town. Tipp City recorded a perfect 20-0 regular season a year ago and returns much of its roster for another run in '06-'07.
Things don't get any easier in Covington's next outing as rival Bethel invades the Buccs' home gym for a critical Cross County Conference match-up. Last season Bethel shocked the Buccs to force a tie for the conference championship.
The schedule remains brutal throughout the remainder of 2006 as the Buccs play three big games on the road.
First, the Buccs travels to Ansonia, who returns much of its roster from last season and is a contender for the conference title once again.
Covington then travels to Russia and Marion Local on back-to-back nights to close out 2006.
The Buccs open up the new year with a talented Tri-Village team in the friendly confines of Covington High School and then host Milton Union the following night.
A big rivalry game follows at Newton as the Buccs look to avenge a last-second defeat at the hand of the Indians the last time they traveled to Newton. The Indians return perhaps the most complete player in the conference in Kyler Booher.
Four of the next five games are at home, which should help Covington get some momentum heading into the final month of the regular season. The Buccs host Mississinawa Valley, New Bremen, Anna and Bradford, while traveling to Franklin Monroe in an 11-day stretch.
Should Covington be in the hunt for a conference title, the final three games of the season could be the deciding factor.
Two of those games are on the road as Covington travels to Arcanum and Twin Valley South before closing out the regular season at home against Tri-County North.
It's a long road for the Buccs over the next three months as the competition is obviously stiff. Should Covington put together a solid season, they'll more than be prepared for a tournament run.
