December 29, 2006 – RUSSIA
Everything that could go wrong went wrong for the Covington Buccaneers Friday night in a frustrating 72-44 loss to Russia.

The Buccaneers shot a meager 32% from the field and 1 of 10 from behind the arc. The free throws were not falling either as Covington only converted for 59%, making 13 of 22 on the night.

Russia, on the other hand, shot 49% from the field, making 25 of 51 attempts. The Raiders also connected on 6 of 14 treys and 16 of 21 free throws.

"We've got some growing to do," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "That's why we have teams like Versailles, Tipp City and Russia on our schedule to find out where we're at. We have to do some sole searching and get better."

Covington managed to hold a rebounding adavantage by pulling down 31 rebounds to 22 for Russia, including a 12-8 advantage on the offensive end.

But it was Russia's defensive pressure that made it tough for Covington to get into a flow offensively. The Raider defense also forced 14 Covington turnovers.

"They (Russia) brought a lot of pressure," Craft explained. "It didn't matter if it was full-court pressure or man-to-man in the half-court set. They have a lot of quickness and we didn't handle the pressure as well as we should have."

Russia got off to a fast start by jumping out to a 12-2 lead in the first 4:00 of the game. Two of the Raiders' six treys came in the run, one by Shafer and the other by Borchers.

After a Buccaneer timeout, Covington played even with Russia over much of the remainder of the half. Russia closed out the first half increasing a 25-15 midway through the second stanza to 35-17 at the half.

Again, a three-pointer was the spark to the Russia run - this time from Cody Anthony.

Russia kept Covington at arms length in the third period to maintain a comfortable lead heading into the final period, 49-32.

The Buccs did score 15 points in the frame, but eight of those came on just four field goals.

"We rushed a lot of shots," Craft explained. "We've got to shoot better than we did tonight."

Shooting struggles was something Russia didn't have to worry about as it capped an impressive performance with 23 fourth quarter points while holding Covington to just 12.

Andy Zumberger led Russia with a game-high 17 points, 11 of those coming in the second period. Seth Mohler led Covington with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

The Buccs fall to 4-4 on the season and travel to Marion Local tomorrow night.

"That (games on back-to-back nights) is the great thing about basketball," Craft said. "After a game like we had tonight, we don't have to wait a week to play again."
