December 1, 2006 COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers took little time to get off to a fast start in the season opener against National Trail, jumping out to a 22-0 lead and cruising to a 50-29 win.
"This is a nice way to start the season," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We were able to get everyone in the game against someone in a different color jersey for once."
It was obvious from the outset that the Buccaneers were much stronger physically, holding National Trail scoreless in the first quarter and building an 18-0 lead.
"Our kids take pride in the weight room and it shows," Craft described. "It starts with the seniors and they set the tone."
Covington increased its lead to 22-0 in the opening minute of the second until National Trail broke the ice with a back-door lay-up by Malachi Jones.
Still, the Buccaneers continued to roll over the remainder of the half as they outscored the visitors 10-2 to take a 32-4 lead at the half.
"We were clicking on all cylinders in the first half," said Craft. "I told the kids at half time that we needed to continue to play with consistency. Defensively we played very well and we got after it on the boards."
The Buccaneer starters remained on the floor for the first 3:00 of the third period and increased the lead to 40-6.
Craft rotated freely the rest of the way, which allowed him to rest some of his players who are banged up.
"We only had 13 practices, so it was good to be able to keep fresh guys on the floor," said Craft. "We were able to rest Gene (Studebaker) who has only had three practices because of a back problem from football."
Still, nine of the fourteen players on the varsity roster reached the scoring column in the 50-29 win.
As evidence of Covington physical dominance, the Buccaneers pulled down 42 rebounds to 20 for National Trail and recorded 24 offensive boards to just 4.
"Rebounding is all about effort and attitude," explained Craft. "I'm pleased with the effort the kids gave tonight. When you have eight seniors, you expect that kind of an effort."
Seth Mohler had a big night for the Buccs in a little over two period of play. The senior forward recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.
Derek Brumbaugh also had a solid night, scoring 9 points and recording 4 rebounds, while Corey Patty contributed with 8 points.
In spite of rotating the entire bench, Covington only committed 9 turnovers and forced 22 National Trail turnovers.
Covington looks to continue what its fast start to the season tomorrow night at home against Fairlawn.
