December 9, 2006 VERSAILLES
The Covington Buccaneers ran into a buzz saw Saturday night in the Versailles Tigers at Versailles High School.
The Tigers received huge nights from Jeremy Shardo and Jordan Liette as each scored 19 points as the rest of the team combined to shoot 66% from the field on 27-41 shooting. Versailles also connected on 3 of 4 from behind the arc for 75%.
Covington, on the other hand, struggled the entire evening - converting just 17 of 47 field goals for 36%. The Buccs struggled from long range as well, making just 2 of 13 three-point attempts for 15%.
Another key statistic was Versailles' advantage on the boards. The Tigers out rebounded the Buccs 23-20, the first time Covington hasn't held a rebounding advantage to this point of the season.
The result was a convincing Versailles' win, 65-45.
Covington started the game on a 6-2 run as Corey Patty made a lay-up and Derek Brumbaugh drilled two jumpers.
Versailles tied the score at 6-6 on a Shardo lay-up and a Tony McNeilan put back.
A Gene Studebaker free throw followed to give Covington its final lead of the contest, 7-6.
The host Tigers went on a 10-4 run to close out the opening quarter as Shardo, Ahrens, Liette and Huffman each contributed with baskets.
After a Shardo trey opened the scoring in the second period, Covington received two straight buckets by Jordy Burelison and Seth Mohler to cut the margin to 19-15.
Versailles then scored eight straight points to push its lead to double digits for the first time in the contest, 26-15.
After a Studebaker jumper and a Mohler lay-up closed the gap to 26-19, Versailles once again increased its lead on a basket by Ahrens and a second trey by Shardo.
Looking to close the gap before the half, Mohler scored on a lay-up and converted the three-point play by making his free throw. But Versailles closed out the half with a jumper by Liette to go into the locker room with a comfortable 33-22 lead.
The Tigers took it to Covington in the opening minutes of the second half as Andrew Swartz scored on a lay-up and a free throw and Ian Nisonger canned a jumper to push the lead to 38-22.
Studebaker responded with a trey to spark a 9-4 run for Covington to close the gap to 42-31 with 2:32 left in the stanza.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 51-31 on a Shardo jumper and seven straight points by Jordan Liette, including two free throws after a technical foul called on Studebaker.
Covington closed out the third with its second and final trey of the contest as Derek Brumbaugh hit nothing but net from the top of the key at the buzzer.
Trailing 51-34 to start the final 8:00, the frustration set in on the Buccaneers.
Covington continued to struggle from the field as it managed just three field goals and converted 5 of 8 free throws in the final quarter.
Versailles continued to roll by scoring 14 fourth quarter points as Shardo capped the 20-point win with a two handed slam.
Covington was led by Seth Mohler with 16 points, while Gene Studebaker and Seth Mohler each scored 10 points.
With the win, Versailles improves to 2-1 on the season, while Covington drops its first game and falls to 3-1.
The Buccaneers look to rebound next Saturday as former Buccaneer, Matt Pond brings his Tipp City Red Devils to town.
