January 19, 2008 – ANNA
Covington coach Roger Craft knew his team was in for a battle against once beaten and state ranked Anna, Saturday.

"We knew what kind of team we would be facing, a really good one," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "But we didn't know it would be that physical."

Anna, who's only loss of the season in fifteen contests came against another state ranked team in New Knoxville, wasn't only physical, but quick and athletic.

The host Rockets beat Covington up and down the floor in the first half in building a 41-13 lead at the break.

"We didn't match their intensity in the first half," Craft explained. "They got a lot of lay-ups in transition. We're the type of team that needs to exceed the intensity of the other team in order to have a chance to win. We didn't do that in the first half."

A positive for Craft's young Buccaneers was the second half performance in which his team played right with Anna.

"They only outscored us 32-28 in the second half," said Craft. "We did a much better job of executing our offense, getting nice cuts to the basket. We also handled their pressure a little better."

Other positives for Covington was it out rebounded Anna on the offensive end 10-5 and recorded 10 steals to the Rocket's 9.

But the difference in the 73-41 outcome was Anna's 40-18 points advantage in the paint and the 22 free throw attempts the Rockets had compared to Covington's five.

"They (Anna) have a nice team," praised Craft. "It lets our kids know where the bar is. This game was a learning experience for us."

Covington connected on 17 of 47 field goals in the contest for 36%, while Anna was 27 of 47 for 57%. The Buccs also committed 19 turnovers to 12 for the Rockets.

Adam Craft led Covington with a career-high 17 points, while Jordy Meyer pulled down seven rebounds.

Covington (2-11) looks to regroup before Tuesday's Cross County Conference match-up with Miami East at Covington High School.
