December 18, 2007 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers dropped their third game in a row - all conference games - as Ansonia came to town and handed the Buccs a 57-43 defeat.

"We've got to make plays," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We play hard, but we're not finishing shots. It's youth an inexperience."

At 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in the Cross County Conference play, the Buccs have dug themselves into a hole. It doesn't get any easier as Covington's next three games to close out 2007 are against Tri-Village, Marion Local and Russia.

"That's going to be tough, but it will make us better," Craft explained. "We've got some growing up to do and we'll get there."

The contest was close throughout the first three periods with Covington holding a 13-10 lead after one, a 21-18 lead at the half and Ansonia claiming a 32-31 lead at the end of the third.

"We played pretty well in the first half," Craft said. "We were able to make some shots and that allowed us to press."

That all changed midway through the third and throughout the remainder of the game.

Covington went cold from the field and Ansonia was able to take advantage on its own offensive end of the floor.

"You can't press if you don't make shots," said Craft. "We played on our heals late in the third quarter and the fourth quarter."

It showed on the scoreboard as the Tigers outscored Covington 25-12 in the final frame to pull away with the win.

Much of Ansonia's success was due to the duo of Eric Beisner and Adam Kremer. The duo combined to score 42 of the Tiger's 57 points and 32 of the 42 rebounds the team accumulated.

"Beisner is a nice player," complemented Craft after the Ansonia senior scored 28 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. "But we didn't do a very good job of boxing out. They (Ansonia) out rebounded us, had less turnovers and shot more free throws than we did. That's the story of the game."

Ansonia's edge on the boards was 42-30, but the bigger story was a 18-10 advantage on the offensive end. That led to 32 points in the paint for Ansonia, compared to 22 for Covington.

Fortunately for Covington, Ansonia failed to connect on any of its 17 three-point attempts. However, the Tigers were able to convert on 13 of 19 from the free throw line, while Covington was 1 for 3.

"That (free throw attempts) shows we are not being aggressive taking the ball to the basket," Craft explained. "In each of our three losses the other team has done a better job of getting to the free throw line and making them."

Covington was led by Andy Sparks with 17 points, while Kody Thiebeau scored 14 points. Sparks and Jordy Meyer each led Covington with 7 rebounds.

Kremer led Ansonia with a game-high 18 rebounds and scored 14 points to go with Beisner's 28 points.

Covington looks to regroup and hopefully get its first conference win on Friday at Tri-Village.
