JANUARY 29, 2008 - COVINGTON
When you shoot 28 percent from the floor and have 24 turnovers your chances of winning are slim to none.

"You can't shoot the ball that poorly and turn the ball over like we did tonight and expect to win," said Covington coach Roger Craft after his team fell to Arcanum 55-34. "It's as simple as that."

Covington started the contest on a 6-1 run, but the lid on the rim closed as the Buccs went without a single field goal over the remainder of the first quarter.

Covington's only remaining point of the frame came on a Kyle Kanet free throw with two seconds left in the opening frame. But by then Arcanum had went on a 13-0 run.

Kanet's two free throw attempts were Covington's last of the game, while Arcanum made 9 of 9 first-half free throws and 14 of 21 for the game.

"They scored nine points at the line in the first half and we were down by 12," Craft said. "We didn't do a very good job of attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line."

Covington remained within striking distance at the half thanks to two big treys, one by Jordy Burelison and the other by Ben Christian.

"We were still in the game at half time," said Craft. "We were doing a good job defensively and crashing the boards. We were hoping some of our shots would start falling in the second half."

Covington's defense continued to keep the deficit manageable throughout the third period, but turnovers prevented the Buccs from getting any closer as Arcanum held a 38-25 lead after three.

"A lot of our turnovers resulted in easy baskets for them," Craft explained. "We just didn't do a very good job taking care of the basketball."

The cold shooting and turnover bug continued for Covington in the fourth quarter as Arcanum pulled away for the 21-point victory.

"We made a lot of the same mistakes tonight that hurt us earlier in the year," said Craft. "It's like we took a few steps forward in the last three games and a huge step back tonight. We have to put this behind us and take steps forward again."

The Buccs connected on just 15 of 54 field goal attempts and 3 of 15 from behind the arc, while Arcanum was 20 for 49 from the floor and 1 for 11 from three-point range.

Covington held the advantage on the boards 35-25, including a 16-9 edge at the offensive end.

No Buccaneer player scored in double figures as Jordy Burelison had a team-high 8 points. Andy Sparks led the way with 9 rebounds.

Covington drops to 5-12 overall and 3-7 in the Cross County Conference and host a red hot Twin Valley South team on Friday.
