December 14, 2007 – COVINGTON
When sophomore Jordy Meyer drilled a clutch three-pointer as time expired in regulation to tie the score at 56-56, it looked as though Covington had the momentum it needed to carry over into overtime.

But Bethel quickly scored after the overtime tip and outscored Covington 12-5 in the extra frame to hand the Buccs a frustrating 68-61 defeat.

"It is frustrating (to lose) because the kids gave a lot of effort," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We would have really liked to have this one."

The loss is the second straight for Covington after a season opening win over Versailles. To make matters worse, both the defeats are conference losses, putting the Buccs' hopes for a conference championship in dire straights just three games into the season.

"It we would have played with the same intensity we showed tonight, we would have won by twenty a week ago," Craft said. "It was good to see the kids come out and play with intensity tonight. We just came up short in the end."

Covington could never gain the lead throughout the contest, but was within striking distance the entire evening.

Twice the Buccs tied the score, including in the final second of regulation.

"We had our chances," said Craft. "We had a lay-up that would have given us the lead late in the second half, but got stripped. We had some open looks for threes, but didn't knock them down."

Covington controlled the boards as evident by the statistics - 32-22 total rebounds and 14-6 advantage on the offensive end.

"We had a number of possessions where we had three or four shots at the basket, but came away without any points," Craft explained. "We have to learn to finish on those opportunities."

Bethel held an 18-12 lead after one and a 28-26 lead at the half.

The Bees increased the lead to 42-38 at the end of the third period, but Covington continued to hang around throughout the fourth quarter until the three pointer by Meyer sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Bethel got the tip and scored on a basket by Masin to take a 60-58 lead and the Bees followed by hitting on all eight free throw attempts in the overtime to seal the game.

"Free throw shooting was another thing we didn't do well," said Craft. "When you shoot eight of 15 and the other team makes 14 of 18 in a close game like this, you'll lose."

Another aspect of the game Craft wasn't pleased with was the turnovers. The Buccs turned the ball over 13 times, many of those resulting in easy baskets in transition.

"We have to do a better job of taking care of the basketball," Craft said. "I saw a lot of positive things tonight with our intensity, rebounding and effort, but there are some things we can improve on."

Covington did have three players in double figures with Andy Sparks leading the way with 16 points. Jordy Meyer and Kody Thiebeau both scored 15 for the Buccs.

Bethel was led by Mason with 20 points, while three others also saw double digits in scoring.

Covington falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Cross County Conference action. the Buccs will look to get back to their winning ways next Tuesday at home against Ansonia.
