February 2, 2008 - COVINGTON
It wasn't how Roger Craft and his Covington Buccaneers wanted to perform on a special night. A 61-38 lackluster loss to Delphos St. John's wasn't the way to honor new members into the Covington Athletic Hall of Fame.
"This isn't how we wanted to walk off the floor tonight," said Craft. "This wasn't a good performance on our part."
Even with Friday's heartbreaking defeat against Twin Valley South still stinging, Craft wouldn't accept any excuses.
"That's part of athletics, where you play hard one night and have to come out and give it your best effort the next," Craft explained. "We don't make excuses. Heck, they (Delphos) played a tough one last night against Coldwater and had to make the long drive here tonight. Plus, they sat through our Hall of Fame ceremony and still came out and hustled their butts off. I'm sure we had tired legs from last night, but they did too."
Covington jumped out to a 12-10 lead at the end of the first period and appeared to have the same intensity it brought to the floor the night before.
But three straight treys by Delphos to start the second quarter took some of the bounce out of Covington as the Blue Jays went on a 15-4 run in the frame to take a 25-16 lead at the break.
"Those three possessions hurt," Craft said. "We're up by two and just like that we're down by seven. We didn't respond very well for the rest of the half."
The Blue Jays increased its lead to 16 points midway through the third, but Covington managed to close the gap to eight late in the frame, 39-31.
But the Delphos defensive pressure frustrated Covington the rest of the way as the visitors pulled way in the fourth quarter for the 61-38 win.
"Their pressure defense bothered us," Craft explained. "We've got to get mentally tougher and stronger with the basketball. We have to improve on all the fundamentals when we get pressure because we'll see more of that in the tournament."
Which isn't too far off with Covington only having one final regular season game at Tri-County North left on the schedule.
"Everyone knows we struggle at times with pressure," Craft continued. "We'll see the in-your-face stuff until we learn to beat it. We've been working on it and we'll continue to work on it in practice."
Covington turned the ball over 18 times on the evening and shot 45% from the floor on 14 of 31 shooting.
The Buccs were also out rebounded by a smaller Blue Jay squad, 22-16.
"That's uncharacteristic of us," Craft said in regards to the rebounding stats. "That's indicative of effort because rebounding is all about effort. They just out hustled us."
Adam Craft was the lone Buccaneer performer to scoring in double figures with 10 points. Craft also led the Buccs in rebounds with five.
Covington (5-14) looks to rebound on Friday at Tri-County North.
