January 18, 2008 – COVINGTON
Basketball games are four quarters and the team that plays the hardest for all four quarters has the best chance of winning.

Unfortunately for Covington, the first half was a lackluster effort at best and the end result was a frustrating 44-41 defeat at the hands of Franklin Monroe.

"I'd say that's a good assessment," said Covington coach Roger Craft in regards to his team's lackluster of effort in the first half. "They (Franklin Mornoe) took it to us and wanted it more than us in the first half."

The first half statistics tell the entire story for the Buccs. They only scored two field goals and recorded three offensive rebounds in the first half. Covington also committed eight turnovers in the first quarter and four more in the second quarter.

"We looked flat," Craft said. "We had a good week of practice and I thought we were ready to play. Evidently I was wrong."

What Covington had going for it in the first half was a stellar defensive effort in the second period in which it held Franklin Monroe to just four points in the frame.

This kept the game within striking distance heading into the second half facing a 21-7 deficit.

"I felt we were still in the game at the half," Craft said. "I told the kids if we could hold them to 42 points we'd have a chance to win."

An entirely different Covington team took the floor in the second half and willed themselves back into the game with hustle and effort.

Trailing 31-17 to start the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers exploded for 24 fourth quarter points to cut the margin to 42-41 with under 10 seconds to play on a Kody Thiebeau stick back.

"I can't figure out why we wait until our backs are against the wall before we start flying around making plays," Craft said. "If we could put together four quarters like we did the fourth, we'd be tough to beat."

One reason for Covington's success in the fourth quarter was they play of Ben Christian. The sophomore scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in the frame to spark a Buccaneer comeback.

"Ben has earned his playing time," Craft explained. "He has done everything we've asked of him at the JV level and has stepped up when we've called his number on varsity."

Still, Covington wasn't able to pull off the miracle as it was forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball back.

Franklin Monroe converted on two free throws for the final points of the night to hand Covington its tenth loss in twelve games. The Buccs also drop to 1-6 in Cross County Conference play and travel to face a powerful Anna team tomorrow.

"The bottom line is we need to do a better job of scoring points," Craft explained. "When you only give up 44 points and lose, that shows you need to get better offensively. We have to give a better effort to expect to win."

And it starts from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
