January 5, 2008 WEST MILTON
The Covington Buccaneers battled Milton-Union in a physical, high-effort contest, but came up on the short end of a 62-53 score.
The Buccs, coming off of a heartbreaker just 24 hours earlier against Newton, fell to 1-8 on the season with the defeat.
"It's frustrating to lose, but the kids are giving everything they've got," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "You can't ask more of the kids because they never quit and continue to work hard."
For a team looking to get a big win, the Buccs couldn't catch a break in the contest as Covington's two inside threats spent the majority of the evening on the bench. Jordy Meyer found himself in foul trouble and eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter. Andy Sparks took a shot to his eye in the opening seconds of the second period and didn't return until Meyer fouled out.
While on the floor, the duo combined for 10 rebounds and 16 points.
"Having those two out hurt us, especially on the boards," Craft said. "Ben Christian and Josh Boehringer gave us some solid minutes, but they played a lot in the junior varsity game."
Rebounding was huge in the game as Milton held a 13-9 advantage on the offensive boards. The Bulldogs also outscored Covington 42-30 in the paint.
"They (Milton) are big and athletic," Craft complimented. "They play above the rim so we needed to do a better job of boxing out. We're not 6-4 or 6-5, so we need to be fundamentally sound against a team like Milton."
There were positives for the Buccaneers as three players scored in double figures.
Kody Thiebeau led the way with 18 points, while Nate Lavey scored 12 and Jordy Meyer scored 11.
"I felt good about how the kids attacked the basket tonight," said Craft. "We shot more free throws tonight because we were more aggressive. We're definitely making strides."
Covington held a 16-10 lead after the first period and a 27-25 lead at the half.
Milton managed to tie the score at 35-35 midway through the third and then followed with eight points on two possessions, all coming from Curt Thompson.
First, Thompson hit on a short runner in the paint to give Milton a 37-35 lead.
Thompson followed with a trey as the Buccs were called for a foul after the shot - giving the Bulldogs the ball. Thompson, who finished with a game-high 27 points, drained another trey to push the lead to 43-35.
"That was a big sequence in the game," Craft said. "We were tied one minute and just like that we were down by eight. That hurt a lot."
Covington managed to close out the third with a jumper by Adam Craft, but couldn't overcome the deficit in the final period.
]"The kids are disappointed because they want to win," said Craft. "But we're going to continue to move forward. Overall, we're making strides and I'm proud of the way these kids are hanging together."
Covington looks to end an eight-game losing streak next Friday at Mississinawa Valley.
